Taking new Sprinter to Baja Norte

One of the great things about the right to travel guaranteed by Article IV of the United States Constitution and its Fifth Amendment is the concomitant right not to travel.

Those who would prefer to avoid Mexico for whatever reason or for no reason at all are free to stay home.
We have no rights, only temporary privileges, just ask any Japanese-American interned in 1942

. . . Just sayin...considering , among others, rapidly evolving domestic hostile, violent political and civil turmoil, A foreign paradise can turn overnight into a living Hell. . . .

I would feel safer driving my Sprinter in Baja than in downtown Portland, Seattle or Manhattan.

Just sayin'.

And with that, I think this conversation about safely traveling by Sprinter on Mex Hwy 1 to a secure campground in Baja Norte has run its course. I'm out.

That's usually the effect anytime God is mentioned.

I hope my comment came with the sarcasm intended. I often wondered if Baja bound sprinters came w a target...turns out a lot of white rich people down there driving around in big expensive rigs. If a thief knew any better they would know I have no money left after paying for my van. And all I can afford is free beach camping in Baja.

That thread remind me ole European joke about California.

European tourist, seating on Canary beach high-stool bar start chit-chat with American tourist who was there as well.
American come from Los Angeles, so typically for European he ask "Is Los Angeles as danger as everybody saying it is?"
"naah, it is all exaggerated. I feel safe in Los Angeles"
"so what you do for living?"
"I am garbage truck rear gauntlet operator"

I spend time in Baja 12 years ago, so likely it changed quite a bit since, but from what I remember/
-Baja residents are deeply religious people, who don't steal period
- not too many cities on peninsula, where you can expect higher crime, but Cabo San Lucas would be the only city where I would like to spend couple of days between seating on the beach
-Cabo is the only place in Baja, where US cruise ships come. That makes the dinner plates about 4 times more expensive than in other areas.
- lot of beach where you can stay for free
-I post the picture of beautiful beach campground, where I paid the owner $4 a night (he wanted $12)
-haul drinking water and as much food as you can from US. You can buy canned food (mostly made in California) in Baja, but for much higher prices.

Late 60's, about 7th grade, traveled with my friend, his dad and sister to Rosito. Saved $20.00 mowing lawns. Blew it all on booze, firecrackers, M80's, bottle rockets and triangle bombs.

Nighttime a war zone with everyone shooting of fireworks. Two Army looking types wearing green fatigues, WWII American style helmets and shouldering M1, shouting Spanish, confiscated our fireworks.

Last night of trip, snuck away, liquor store sold me two sixers of Dos XX. drank two, don't recall much. Woke next morning staring at a heap of peas and carrots, ruminants of dinner squatting in my bag and quickly evicted.

Sick for 3-days, the thought or sight of beer triggered dry heaves. It was my beer baptism into toxic masculinity done proper.

Hi, weekend "booze cruises" from Long Beach, CA to Ensenada are popular.
I did not find Ensenada interesting, but the nearby wineries were okay.

I believe I did say "do not stop for at least 2 hr after crossing the border".
I made the mistake on my return trip, when Friday morning I stop at beach campground in Ensenada.
It was beautiful Friday morning, but at night lot of Californians arrived and covered everything with marijuana smoke, mixed with fumes from contractor-grade generators.
Also plan to cross Mexico/California border in the afternoon. That was 2nd mistake to go there in the morning and about 50 border crossing lanes had 1 mile backup on them. (beat even San Francisco Bay Bridge). That was before Coronavirus, so times have changed.
On other hand we did smuggle several cactus plants to California and blocking commute with 40' bus made the border patrol letting us go after 40 seconds check. So heavy traffic can be advantage ;)

...And there I was... Hainan province, southern city of Sanya, basking on the beach of Yolong Bay, home to the Chinese super supreme secret submarine base, and except for a few Russians and Scandinavians, not a soul in sight. Paradise found.

Return 8-years later, a perpetual putrid cloud of diesel exhaust hung heavy in the evening air and no longer healthy to enjoy patio evenings. Paradise lost.

He border is open to all Southbound Americans and Canadians, for now. This could change soon, as there has been an uptick in cases in all border StaJust returned from a two week road trip to Baja. Crossed at Mexicali, and the process has never been easier. We have driven down there several times, and this crossing was the easiest by far!
Low Sulphur Diesel is not a problem, unless you are getting diesel from the guy in Cataviña selling it out of a barrel. ?
As far as CoVid goes.....we felt safer there than anywhere in the States! We observed 100% compliance with masks, and temperature scans at every grocery.

Safety has never been an issue. As said above...we never camp somewhere alone until we are south of Guerrero Negro. Mostly, we end up renting palapas on weekdays for about $10-15/night right on la playa. Weekends can get busy with locals at some areas. Our Sprinter is a plain passenger model and doesn’t draw any attention. Mexicans think we are just another vehicle moving people. Lots of Sprinters further South.
Discover Baja is the best resource we have found for all things Baja. They are great! One stop shop for FMM Tourist Visa, Auto Insurance, and up to date advice on Border Crossings, Military Checkpoints, and Road Conditions. Well worth the $39 membership fee!
Lastly.....Agua. Each town has what is called an “Aqua Purificante” (or several). These are places where you can have purified water or alkaline water filled for about 25 cents per gallon. We have a 5 gallon BPA Free water jug that we use, and also have 2 5 gallon collapsible containers. These facilities also sell 10lb bags of ice for about $1 each.

Your thirst for truth is easily quenched.

Here's few recommendation

  • Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches or jewelry.
  • Exercise increased caution when visiting local bars, nightclubs, and casinos"
  • 100,000 Sprinter OK?

Rub mud all over it or something. Kind a like a Sprinter Ghilly suit. Maybe toss in a few dents here and there. Broken windows really look add dilapidated look.

Don't get smashed in bars.
could be here after election!!!
