Three Seat...Two Seat

Red Fish...Blue Fish....

My 2020 came with a beautiful three seat bench with individual reclining backs. I wanted extra seats, especially for small person car seats, but this beautiful leatherette was 33% too big. I did move the Sprinter mounting brackets back about 20" so my new two seat can be placed in one of two positions so walk around is not an issue. After taking it apart I manipulated the seat frame by moving one member to cut one seat off. The welds I made are very strong and worth precious cargo. Here are a few pictures. I took the frame to an upholster and had a few seams moved so the leatherette attaches.

This is a video that shows the final seat configuration. To store it in my garage I created a bracket with wheels. While not in the Sprinter I now have a Mercedes Reclining Two Seat Garage Couch I can roll anywhere. Very comfortable.

Great idea. I also cut down a three-seater to a two-seater but am finding that we don't use it enough to justify the space it requires. I really don't want to get rid of it, so using it as garage furniture is the perfect solution.

Do you simply cut the Drivers side seat out and swap the Seat back to keep the arm rest mechanism? Or do you have to cut the middle seat out and weld the outside seats together?

There isn't anything simple here. The center support is cut out (discarded) and the far left is grafted in its place. To pull this off you have to destroy the tube to harvest the left support. You destroy the center support to retain the tube structure where you need to weld the left support. At least that is the way I did it. The Lear seat is beautiful so I was motivated. The welds have to be good. Study the pictures.

Not in Portland but may travel up there over the holidays.
Any chance you'd want to make an offer? I don't think I'd ever be able to decide on an asking price.

An upholstery shop in Beaverton is going to be cutting my 3 seater down to 2 seats over the next week. Their price was very reasonable and I've seen another seat they did that looked good. I'll let you know how it goes whenI get it back.

Cheers

OP-Well done. Wish I had the reclining backs of the newer van!!

My 4 seater got sold, the 3 seater is the garage furniture (mostly occupied by the dog when I am wrenching) and the 3-2 conversion carries my girls close enough that the can smack each other while they argue in the back....

The space savings of the 2 seat over the 3 is HUGE, much more than i figured it would be. Completely transformed the usability of my van interior.

One of the best mods i made was removing the seat brackets when not in use. I made adapters and sheet metal cover plates. The floor is nice and flat and is easier to clean.

Easier way to do it...

So, I'm looking at doing this same thing but wondering, Why not just cut the outside (passenger side) seat off, sew it up and be done?

What do you gain by moving the support legs and cutting out the middle seat?

The center leg doesn't lock into the track. Also you will lose child seat attachment. And I think it's easier to finish the seat cover with just one seam needed vs closing the end.

Will you sell me the 2 seater if it can still be attached to the van floor?

Not to highjack the thread, but another alternative that does require some work with the rails and flooring is to find a MB Metris bench
seat. The Metris seats come as a 2/3 combo, match the Sprinter seats, and they're movable/removable. In our case the seat rails were so
long that cutting them in half ( lengthwise ) yielded two sets of rails so we could orient the seats towards the slider or towards the front when
we have passengers.

Cheers

I never removed it from the van! :) We ended up getting a Sprinter motorhome so the van has only been used as a get-around-town vehicle, which means it's rarely driven.

There are times when it's nice to be able to seat a couple extra people, so I can go either way. My asking price was $1,700 and I would still sell it for that amount.
