Transmission not shifting

With out warning my 2006 Sprinter with 114,000 is not shifting faster then 20 mph. You can still go 30 but it's not shifting (noisier and heating up). Also the P, N, R, and D letters on the dash have disappeared. Park, neutral, reverse, and drive still work but those indicator letters are gone. I got the code U0101 and P0088. Also the ABS, ESP, and that traction control lights went on later too.

I checked the fuses on the battery, under the seat, and under the steering wheel and they look ok.

Any help is needed as this van is used for taxi service. So for now we are out of service/out of business.

Flipping through my The Complete Sprinter Fault Code Guide, I see no codes with a prefix of "U". What code reader are you using?

I'm using "ScanGauge. U0101 "Lost Comm with TCM" I do have a iSOFT MBII. I'll hook that up and see what it shows.

Have you checked the electrical plug on the transmission for signs of fluid leaks and then the plug onto the TCM under the drivers seat for oil contamination?

Keith.

Thanks for your post. I just went under there and checked... what a leak and what a mess. Is it the electrical plug that is doing all the leaking?

This morning I took out the drivers seat. And took out the TCM bracket for a close look at the TCM and checked transmission relay #5. I didn't see any oil or water under the seat or connections. Why unplug the TCM under the driver's seat?

To see if transmission fluid wicked up into the TCM, it happens. Damn that is a dirty transmission, make sure you clean that all up before opening anything.

Yes, time to change trans fluid and seal. Ok I'll unplug the TCM first. And luckily I have a new "Guide Bushing" for the electrical connecter so I will do that too.

That electrical plug is where the leak was coming from. Just having trouble disconnecting the 13 pin connector. Any hints on how to remove and reinstall that plug.

Thanks, Tim

1 - PLUG CONNECTOR

2 - GUIDE BUSHING

5) Disconnect 13-pin plug connector (1) (Fig. 124). Turn bayonet lock of guide bushing (2) anti-clockwise.
(6) Loosen guide bushing (2) and remove from transmission housing.

For the connector removal, disconnect the negative cable so you don't short anything out, clean that plug and surrounding area really well with some contact cleaner. If your van has a cover with a zip tie on the connector just snip the zip tie and remove the plastic cover. Then turn the white portion of the adapter plug with the blade piece downward. If it's stuck a stout flatblade can be used for leverage but be careful as the plastic can become brittle. It should be doable by hand with a little patience. Once the blade of the adapter plug is facing downward the 13 pin connector will release. Pull it out, and with a deep 7mm socket losen the single bolt holding the adapter in place. The bolt is captive and stays with the apdapter. Then pull the adapter out. Clean the 13p connector with contact cleaner to get all the oil out. There are some great threads on reassembly but it's pretty straight forward: lube orings, Index adapter and seat by hand. Tighten bolt carefully and with a surprisingly small amount of torque. Reinstal plug. One of the easier maintenance items on the van. Youll want to drain trans fluid first.

With the IC display showing blank I’d go with the tcm. Changing the electrical plug on the trans is also a good idea since it may have been the cause of death for the Tcm. I’ve had a few bad tcms lately with no signs of fluid near them. Of course proper testing is the best way to be sure but tcms are cheap...

"With out warning my 2006 Sprinter with 114,000 is not shifting faster then 20 mph". I'd like to say there was a warning... That morning I was driving that van and everything was good. My wife took over driving that taxi in the afternoon. A few hours later she came home and said there is something wrong. She said there was a sudden loss of power and it was overheating.

All day yesterday (most of the time was clean-up); disconnect negative battery, take off drivers seat, check and unplug the TCM, drain the transmission fluid in the pan (only about two quarts there), put in new filter and transmission seal, disconnect electrical plug, install a new "guide bushing" , plug back in the connector, put in transmission fluid, plug back in the TCM, reconnect the battery, and test drive.

Turn on engine and still not showing P, N, R, and D display. Park, Neutral , and Reverse work ok. But transmission Drive is still not shifting up, like stuck in 2nd gear.

PS.... We are driving on some unpaved roads. It was dry and dusty the last few days. That's how all that mess under the transmission happened. Next time I will check under there more often.

Thanks with your help with that. I tightened that bolt as hard as I can by hand. I didn't want to torque with a ratchet because that little bolt, with not much thread, looks too easy to strip.

Thanks, I'm going to look into TCMs and changing the electrical plug. TCMs are easy to take out and replace hopefully that's the problem. I could take one out of my other Sprinter and try that. But maybe not a good idea?
Yes, testing is the best way. I don't know much about testing or have Sprinter shop/mechanic here.

Hijack your thread here for a few words , I do have a personal "fleet"of MB vehicles which are most using 722.6 tranny ( I called the Hercule tranny) and did a lotsa works on them including modification the governor plates for better shifting, change seals ,conductor plates , shift solenoids blah blah blah..................... This type of 772.6 can last up to 300K miles before rebuild if property cares .
Your tranny works before changing new fresh fluid and should work after , problem mostly when instrument display doesn't show tranny positions or limp mode is comontly came from improperly seat of tranny plug to conductor plate when change to new one or some case when new install new plate .
I had change my new conductor plate and did happen same like your but clear trouble code with iCarsoft MBII at a easy click (F2) and I don't think ya have problem with TCU at all .
Good luck bud.
