Random shifting from Drive to 4 at times

Any ideas? We will be driving or at a stop and starting to drive again when we notice the van is in 4 rather than D for drive. No accidental bumping of shifter. Two instances were bumpy roads. These occurs days apart. Could the bumps be causing it to slip into 4th? How expensive will this be to fix?

There are centering springs and electrical contacts. If the assembly isn't up to operating standard the contacts can bump together without the shifter being touched. There could be other issues. Worn harness wires for example.

You can typically loosen the security torx bolts that disassemble the shifter and push the shifter in the opposite direction. In your case push it to the right (+ side) and then tighten the bolts if that doesn’t fix it you need a shifter

Yep, not sure why it happens but worth a shot.

Reworking the contacts requires a fair bit if disassembly, but is doable if you are handy.
