Tire treat wear - KO2's?

Hi all,

I got new BG Goodrich K02's installed on my van at ~3,500 miles.

The van was driven to and from Alaska this summer and now, 6 months later, I have 20,000 miles on the van. I did not rotate the tires until about 18,000 miles.

Today I took a closer look at the front tires (which had been the rear tires for about 15,000 miles) and noticed they are significantly more worn than the rears. Not sure the exact amount but I'd say at least 2/32nd's more than the rears.

The van weights a lot, about 9,400 lbs, 5,200 of which is in the rear.

Is this sort of wear to be expected based on how much I weigh and the number of miles driven without a rotation?

The tires have a 50,000 miles guarantee but I'm not exactly sure what that means! Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Assuming you have a 4 tire van that sounds normal for the weight and using AT tires which are softer. It is common to rotate the spare tire in.
Your tire guarantee is usually pro-rated to the percentage of the miles driven to reach 2/32" remaining. If your tires fully worn down at 25k , you'd get a 50% discount on your replacement KO2s or 50% refund depending on guarantee terms, assuming you rotated the spare in.
Some guarantees do not cover commercial vans or RVs, you'd have to read the guarantee given to you at purchase.

No way you get 50k out of any ATs on a sprinter or rv platform. they are all just too soft...I usually get 25-30K miles of usable AT life on any one of my heavy trucks (LC80, GMC 3500)...maybe if you wear them down to bruh truck level (no tread) you can push 50K but they aren't an AT then...

On our sprinter 4x4 I'm at 66K on my Michelin at ltx and more than half usable tread remaining. I'll probably switch at 80-90K regardless...they perform just fine aired down "offroad"...and in snow are amazing...best tire for me since at least half our trips are highway to get to that place

No KO2 experience, but given they seem to be a super common sprinter tire choice, I would anticipate you should get long-term wear responses.

I don't know about the KO2 tire compounds, but experience with various types of tires has showed me that tire wear usually isn't mileage linear and that they tend to wear more initially (first 20k than second or third 20k).

AK trip - awesome (double clicked into thread when I read that), what were road conditions to/from and while you were there? Highway pressures or aired down a bit for gravel or unimproved roads? Expect that would factor into your wear experience as well.

For reference... wear on Goodyear Duratracs have been excellent relative to stock all-season & all-terrain tires on various vehicles we've owned.
I haven't been diligent with regular rotations (probably about once a year; 3-5 times maybe 12-17k; I have discount tire records, but just don't recall since I'm not on regular rotation schedule with this vehicle).
Stock size 245/75R16 on 2015 170HR 2wd 4cyl passenger / gear hauler so not heavy as fully converted camper; 4+ yrs; 63k+mi current depth 8/32nd F and 6/32nd R. Probably 75% interstate mileage.
 
Id say that is par for the course for KO2's. I dont think they dissipate heat well, and they dont stay balanced so they tend to have wear problems. Frequent rotations with those will help substantially. DTBD is correct on non-linear wear across the life of the tire. Rate should slow a little now.

For reference I have 25K miles on a set of WildPeak At3W's and have 13/32's tread remaining (18/32 new) (4 tire rotation, I dont rotate my spare in). I expect to get around 60-70K miles out of them, retiring them at 2-3/32nds. Im not quite as heavy as you, typically rolling around 8500lbs. I rotate once a year, so around every 12K miles.

Ill make the same suggestion I always do when it comes to tires: Look into alternatives to the cult favorite k02. Not everyone has to drink the same coolaid

Unrelated to tire brand, but something which I noticed about rear tire wear.

I recently changed the rear shocks on the 2004 2500 140. The shocks weren't leaking. I didn't notice the ride being terrible. I got a really good deal on some Monroe 66417 intended for the 3500 models. After those were installed the ride improved significantly.

The reason for this reply.

When I removed the old shocks the passenger side shock operated as expected when I moved it manually. It was smooth. No skipping. The driver side didn't move easily and just seemed dead. I also noticed that the driver side rear tire showed some cupping.

I have noticed cupping on front tires which was related to bad shocks or struts. I've not noticed that for rear tires before this. I've pulled off some really dead rear shocks over the decades. Maybe I just wasn't being observant.

So not sure where it’s published about the mileage warranty but the KO2 comes with a zero from BFG. Sounds about right for a heavy diesel application with prolonged rotate intervals. BFG cane out with a DT designation for certain 10ply tire sizes due to high TQ and weight causing excessive wear. Call Michelin and ask for a goodwill towards some Defender LTX tires. They will do everything your van is capable of off road and last 70k miles.

Went back and checked my Michelin data book and the DT is the only KO2 that carries the mileage warranty. Still pursue the goodwill warranty. They will deny your mileage warranty based on no rotate records until 18k miles.

I have seen goodwill warranty exceed 50% credit on the regular and even into the 70% if you really make a stink.
