Please help me out with the infamous steering lock out issue

So my sprinter stranded me the other day and I got it towed home. Wheels were locked at slight angle. Got it home and I removed the cover from the locking mechanism. I wasn’t getting any power to the unlock motor when I’d put the key in. I took the locking pin out and straightened the wheels. Tried inserting the key, and nothing. So I noticed the pin has a magnet on it and I figured it needed to be put back in so the truck could read the magnet. I placed it back in the slot and inserted the key and the motor started moving but still no key unlock to turn. So I thought maybe that magnet needed to move up or down since the motor was trying to turn without the gear in place. Tried putting the gear back in place, but the motor seems to get stuck. So I tried turning the gear upside down and it seemed like it got better but motor still seems to get stuck. So is there a certain point that magnet needs to be in order for the key to unlock?
