I’ve been thinking about getting a late model 2016-2018 or 2019 4x4 170wb Sprinter. I don’t know much about this 170WB Model. Planning on a light to medium build adventure type rig. For those of you have driven these would I be Loaded down with the 2500 or should I be looking more towards the 3500. What about a dually? I will at times pull a light aluminum trailer with two ATV (3500 pounds max) I need to narrow my search. Thanks.

Is the 3500 available With either 4 wheels or dually? I thought there was an option of something called “Super Single wheels/ tires” where they used different tires on front versus rear.

3500 170WB was and is available either as a dually or Susi. (Super single) The super single uses different size wheels and tires on the rear. I've had a 170 DRW and now own a 144 DRW 3500.

Looks like the 2019 3500 in 4x4 are the 3500xd and available only in DRW. The 2 wheel drive models are available as a Super single or DRW. If you look hard enough on the MB website you can download a brochure. So my choices in 4x4 are 2500 170, or 3500xd DRW. On a light to medium build out would I need the 3500xd DRW??

Hmmm... When I ordered my 2019 4x4, it just came as a 2500, single rear wheel vehicle. I don't recall any option for a dually ("DRW"). The dually would be for increased interior weight capacity or perhaps towing? What else would you do with this?

I think it depends on how heavy of build and how often you pull your trailer. We purchased a 19, 170 3500 and I can tell even empty while cruising on the highway it feels much more stable then our 144 2500 pop top did.

We will pick ours up in a couple weeks and drive the same 700 miles back home so it will be interesting to see how if feels loaded down (it's a fairly heavy build)

We had the same question before ordering ours & I talked to Jesus at Agile, he was very friendly and informative, this helped us make the decision for the 3500 and not require adding new springs etc to handle the load. Looking at the 170's stock they are almost level so adding much weight and especially a trailer will cause the back end to settle.

I have a heavy 170 4x4 that sits 3-4” taller than the stock 4x4 van. My van rides better now than when it was new and empty. This is mostly due to the suspension upgrades from Agile. The 3500 will give you added capacity but mostly on the rear axle. The front axle capacity of the 3500 is similar to the 2500.

I purchased a new 2017 3500 4X4 extended in Jan of 2018, driven over 30K in all kinds of conditions from 16" of fresh snow to the deserts of Utah. It's my first DRW van that I've owned, I like the way it handles as well as hav ing there ability to get me where I need to go, pics can be found on my blog at

I have had a couple of 170 3500's. I like them in the snow.

I would like to get a 170 4X4.

What are the pro's and con's of a 170 2500 4X4 and a 170 3500 4X4?

Which is better driving on sand beaches?

I'm guessing the 3500 4X4 is better in the snow?

Thanks, Ross

Hi,
For snow over pavement, you want skinny tires that cut through the snow to the road.
For ice, you want chains or studs.

For sand, you want fat tires (or dual tires I guess).
