T21 Recall for OM647s - Recommended Dealerships

Wouldn't 2005 Sprinter Freightliner with MB engine built out by Forest River
be a 2004 chassis?

It is a 2004 chassis Sprinter Freightliner with Mercedes engine built out by Forest River.
Correction, it is a 2004 MERCEDES chassis and engine, badged as a Freightliner and built out by Forest River.

The ONLY parts on it that are true Freightliner are the badges!

He's basically correct. He forgot a comma.

... It is a 2004 chassis Sprinter Freightliner with Mercedes engine, built out by Forest River. Thanks!
To pick nits.

Even the badges aren't Freightliner. They are parts procured by Mercedes for the Sprinter Freightliner execution. The parts that have the Freightliner logo and grill style are licensed under Freightliner. Once the Sprinter has the Freightliner execution it is marketed, sold, and serviced under the Freightliner name.

Anyway. Back to topic.

Just consider anything you need that is engine or drive train related as a NAS aka NAFTA 2004 Sprinter.

and that appears to be important on the recall.
Am I right in that the 2005-06 are OK for the T21 recall without problem? The 2004 and older will toast the dash cluster?

2004 generally is the problem child, but I'm quite certain that I remember some stories about 2005 and 2006 MY having issues after the recall was performed. I don't recall (pun intended) if the IC needed to be replaced for those though.

Thank you all. Now trying to get MB USA to reopen the recall this specific van. Trying to explain to them it was the recall that caused these issues that never got fixed.

Any suggestions on how to get Mercedes Benz USA to reopen a recall for this specific Van to correct this problem with the ECM? Thanks!

The need to replace the instrument panel has been avoided by MB/Freightliner (Daimler owns Fl) recently coming up with an adapter that plugs in behind the instrument panel (i.e. lift the hump, plug it in, drop the hump) and makes magic happen on the CANbus.

There's a thread about it with photos.

Thanks for the input. I found info on using the adapter that plugs in behind the instrument panel. Now trying to get MB to install the adapter and I guess it needs programing? Dealer in NC is saying he wont touch it unless Mercedes Corp USA reopens the recall on this specific van VIN. Anybody have the trick to get Mercedes Corp USA to reopen the recall? I bought the van used unknowing there was this issue.

The new add-in module *itself* does not need programming.
The ECM needed reprogramming as part of the T21 recall.
That reprogramming is what triggered/began the "does not fully turn off" symptom.
So: "all you need" is that new module plugged in (i do NOT know if the ECM now uses different recall programming, i'll say "i doubt it")

The module has a price of $300 (probably used by MB to sell to Dodge) if the dealer won't re-open the recall status for your Sprinter.

I'm one of the ones running the adapter. Still no issues with it. Since I hadn't already performed the T21 recall (MB calls it something different), I didn't have to deal with "re-opening" it, however I can attest that it was still difficult to get the dealer to understand the problem. The new recall procedures unfortunately don't tell the dealer techs anything about the instrument cluster issues that are caused. The only way I got ahold of someone knowledgeable is I complained enough to the dealer and made enough calls to corporate customer service that the sprinter shop foreman called me directly and I didn't have to deal with the advisors or other front desk people. The foreman admitted that they don't really work on T1Ns anymore and hadn't done that recall any time recently, BUT he at least knew who to call. Since my dealer is a certified Sprinter dealer who sells volumes of new sprinters, they have a regional sprinter "REP" who covers multiple dealerships and is apparently a competent person connected to the factory and knew all about the new adapter/instrument cluster problems... Only once THAT person got involved did everything fall in to place.

So not really a trick, but maybe try pressing your dealer for their sprinter rep contact. Once you get in touch with someone who actually knows about the problem with these recalls, I would think they should re-open it. The issue is getting past all the front line customer service people that don't even know what a sprinter van is, let alone recall issues with them.

I did receive a survey from Daimler Vans after my service to which I wrote a stern complaint faulting them more than my actual dealer due to the lack of information they provide to their dealers regarding these recalls. I of course never heard anything back about whether is was read or not.

Hey!
I’m a proud owner of a 2004 (doh!)
I’m keep getting the p2822 code triggering CEL. I’ve put in time and money into the vehicle to bring it to par (recently bought, and it sat for a long time prior), and now this seems to be the only thing puzzling both me and other mechanics. I’ve seen 2 things from the forum:
1) is that this code is indicative of IC needing replaced. As I also have the dash light issue that goes off after I turn the keys on/off.
2) the code is for solenoid “j” which doesn’t seem to exist.

Are new ICs available? Anyone in PDX area recommend a shop that has experience with this?

p2822

It is highly unlikely to be related to the J solenoid that the NAG1 transmission doesn't have.

More likely related to the T21 recall.

Skim through this thread.

New IC's aren't available except possibly as NOS. The new module fix may correct your problems. Info for that is in Post #1 near the bottom of the page.
