Sprintshift problem ?

Hi,

I have got an interesting problem with a 316CDi 2006 fitted with a Sprintshift 6 speed semi auto box.

It's been converted to a motorhome and I tow a racecar in a trailer behind it, so has quite a bit of load most of the time. About 2 hours into a 3hr journey it dropped out of auto A on dash and went into manual shift mode with the gear displayed in the dash ie 6. Also it seemed to drop into limp home mode on the ECU with a lack of power.

When I stopped and turned everything of it was cured, but on setting off it would do it repeatedly for the rest of the journey. On the journey back today all was fine. Anyone any ideas ?

Thanks

Nick

Thanks for the replies guys

Yes read a few posts and "mean in green" seems to know his stuff, so hopefully might have seen this one before. Not sure it's the pump as everything still works OK, it's just that the ECU has gone into low power mode and that it won't go into Auto without turning everything off. Still goes up and down the box no problem. Do the boxes have a temp sensor ? and could it have got too hot ?

My 313 does the same thing. We traced the fault to a split intercooler hose. Best course of action is get the codes checked.

In my experience Sprintshift problems are usually related to either the pump, the valve block, release bearing, the clutch and/or flywheel. It's also possible to experience an effect with Sprintshift that originates from a seemingly totally unrelated source - which is why a plug in will be your best course of action.

Star is excellent at diagnosing problems with Sprintshift through the SSG menu, partly because the vehicle side of this system has plenty of sensors. The fault will be stored anyway, and it's good that you can easily replicate it again.

The pump is obviously able to build enough pressure to shift the cogs, my gut feeling is that whatever is causing it to drop out of A mode into manual is probably the same thing triggering the limp mode too. If the clutch has gone you should do the flywheel at the same time. Again, with Sprintshift you can pretty much determine all of this without taking the gearbox off, but you will need an SDS plug in to do that.

If you can get it to Tamworth I can point you in the direction of an independant specialist with SDS, otherwise it's a dealer job. A clutch and flywheel at the dealer will be ~£1,100, so you might want to get them to diagnose it and think about having the work done elsewhere.

THanks for the replies guys, current status is that the problem seems to have gone away,:idunno: done another weekend away with about 400 miles, no problem. But I have had the fault codes checked and none were logged. Will have a look and see if there are any small leaks from the intercooler hoses, certainly no big ones as have done an initial check.

I would check your vac circuit for leaks too. I've found for example that a faulty vac transducer will cause my Sprintshift to drop out of A mode - like I said, not obviously related to the 'box! You can easily search quite a bit about these topics on the forum.

THanks for your tips, more stuff to look through. Will be away for a couple of weeks, but will check before I next use it. Cheers

First thoughts are moisture ingress after the wash down. Wait for it to properly dry out and see what happens over the next few days.

Seems improbable that the other routine work would result in these symptoms. Did you change the fuel filter? I'm just wondering if air became trapped if you did. Remove, top off with diesel and replace if so.

:frown:My Sprinter is an '02 2.8 diesel on which is a Rapido 941M "A" Class motorhome. In the recent cold weather I had some unusual (to me!) problems. When trying to start I had a solenoid clicking so recharged the veh battery & tried again. This time no click, nothing. Waggled the selector, checked the hand brake, put foot on brake pedal etc ....NOTHING. Eventually after no particular combination of these ..away she went, perfect! Later I tried to to start up & she did, but the the selector did not want to select!! Then it did & she drove perfectly!
Is/are there (several) microswitches in the system that could be affected by damp/cold?
Is my problem related to the selector? Initially I blamed the Sigma alarm, but I am pretty sure the problem is vehicle related.
HELP!

Hi
I read many messages and I think find answer for my problem.
I work on a sprinter sprintshift who don't accept A mode and tested with star dont have any errors in SSG but in EDC I have shutoff valve actual and stored error and can't be erased.
So my question is can that error in EDC ecu causes problem in SSG?
