Any concerns using Walmart's "SuperTech" DEF?

Hi all! I'm currently in Vermont and it's time to top-off my DEF so I stopped Wallmart and the only DEF they had on the shelf was their own private label (sort of) "SuperTech". The date appears fine but I'm a little concerned with using Wallmart's product. The price was certainly right as it was about $8.00 for the 2.5 gallon container. To date I've used Peak's Blue DEF in my unit. While I did purchase the DEF I've yet to put it into my unit. Given how important DEF is in our Sprinter chassis I thought I'd check with you all to get some feedback on whether or not it's a good idea to use their product. Thanks in advance for your input.

As long as it is labeled ISO 22241 you are good to go.

Might be worth Googling the product to understand what issues have been reported before deciding to use it. As I understand, ISO 22241 has 4 parts.

Well, while the Walmart SuperTech DEF has an API (American Petroleum Institute) certification on the label nowhere on the container is there a reference to ISO22241. Taking TSiles advice I researched SuperTech on the web and the majority of comments where positive regarding the use of SuperTech but there were several "warnings" from consumers who believed they had gotten bad DEF in their vehicles by using SuperTech. Of course that may or may not be true??? Additionally, the only date labeled on the bottle I purchased was BSE-8564-06/06/18 and not the Julian method I've read about that identifies the place of manufacture as well as the expiration date. I'm not sure what the date on the bottle represents, expiration or manufacture, but my "guess" is it's the expiration date since it's unlikely to have been produced on the 6th of June 2018 and be the last bottle on the shelf at Walmart on the 18th of June 2018. And while it's possible that it was manufactured on the 6th I've decided to play it safe and go to a local automotive supply and buy the Peak brand at almost twice the price. That way I'll be able to determine how recently it was produced. In all likelihood Walmart's DEF is produced in the same plant as Peak and this might be much to do about nothing but I'm not willing to run the risk of bad DEF for a $7.00 difference in price.

Thank you, Bobnoxious, for the additional posts with more information on DEF. I really appreciate how active and helpful forum members are in responding to member's queries.

I did check the seal as I too have read about DEF being adulterated and the seal is in tact. But as I've stated I'm taking the safe route and returning the DEF to Walmart as it's not labeled ISO 22241. Thanks once again for your input.

A lot of containers of seemingly reputable DEF fluid seem to omit the 2241 designation. I suspect they are just fine, but I agree with you: Why take the risk?

I can't find the post now but I could have sworn someone said that the Mercedes rep at the Las Vegas rally told folks that all DEF uses the same formula so you don't have to worry about it? However, I've always bought "Name Brand" Blue Something just to be safe.

I have been using the Walmart 2.5 gallon blue DEF jugs for over 37,000 miles on two Sprinter vehicles with no problems whatsoever. Obviously, one should make sure that the induction seal is intact. But this is true of everything else, isn't it? As far as someone returning it for a refund: Are you kidding? These cost about $7.45 each. Is there someone so desperate that he spends $7.45 for a 2.5-gallon jug of DEF to put into a $100,000 plus RV then fills it with water and returns it for $7.45? This won't cover the cost of a Big Mac today nor will it cover the cost of the diesel in carrying out this fraud!

Making DEF is a big time operation mostly because of the required purity of the urea and water but also because it is a huge business volume-wise (takes a huge investment in equipment). Walmart does not produce DEF. Neither do most other brands including Mercedes. Most likely there are one of two producers of this product in North America and they private label it for every brand you can find. If it makes you comfortable to pay a couple of dollars per gallon more for a "Name Brand" then by all means do so. It won't make you one damn bit safer than using Walmart's DEF. Besides that, I have a lot more confidence in Walmart responding to a bad DEF claim than some largely unknown seller with a fancy looking jug costing three times as much.

I've used it for 35000+ miles in my 2016 TB but did have to have the DEF heater, whatever that is replaced under warranty. Tech assured me it was NOT due to bad DEF.

I did return one jug to WalMart. When I looked in the store the seal looked good but when I went to open it, the seal more or less fell off. Manager and I both agreed that it didn't smell right and gladly exchanged for another.

This was in Billings, MT and it's not Mercedes owners, its meth heads; didn't surprise manager at all, he'd seen it before and told me about it.

Also, although I can't find the post, I distinctly remember having an internet discussion with someone here (I think) about the ISO label. He said don't use Walmart DEF because it's not labeled, but I took a picture of a jug which was clearly labeled with the number.

I continue to use the Walmart DEF.

I continue to use the Walmart DEF.

I’ve used Walmart DEF for over 2 years without issues. There is usually a Walmart somewhere on the route and I like being able to buy some DEF with groceries and other supplies.
