Hi everyone,
I am posting this in case someone experienced something similar. My van has a slight tapping/ticking noise that happens ONLY in these conditions:
- Engine hot (Operating temperature, 80-85 celcius)
- After having done at least 15-20 miles at highway speed (100-110 km/h)
When I exit the highway and come to a stop, the engine idles. Then it starts ticking slightly. It's definitely not a knocking noise. The weird thing is that as soon as I rev up to 1200-1400 RPM it disappears completely. It may come back next stop, or not. it's very random. If I put the tranny in Park and let it idle, it can stop, then playing with the throttle it may reappear around 1000 and goes around 1200-1300. The tranny position has no effect on it, and vehicle moving or not has no effect either. It reminds me of the hydraulic lifters ticking noise I had in my Vanagon Westfalia when engine has sat for a while and they were unloaded with oil. Not that concerning maybe but it annoys me. The best thing may be to have it listen by a Sprinter specialist. But maybe you guys have suggestions on what to check. I did about 100 miles today and I did hit traffic. It clicked randomly after stop. When I accelerate is clicks and then when I hit 14-1500 rpm it goes away.
Oil and filter has just been replaced (didn't change anything for the noise), with OEM filter and Mobil 0W40. The van don't burn oil (About 1 quart for 15 000 km). Van has 342 000 km. (212K Miles)
I pulled the cover, no black death all injectors are clean. It's difficult to reproduce the noise and listen in the engine bay given the very specific conditions it happens. I had a random fuel smell under the hood, but I think I related it to my attempts to fire up the Espar with no success.
Any comment/Suggestion is very welcome
Thanks
Vince
