Here comes Hyundai

Could it look any more like a Sprinter? Nearly every body detail is the same....probably why I like it! Do love the modernized interior. I've gotten quite used to getting 24-27 MPG with my OM651, so a diesel it would need to be.

EDIT---nevermind, Hyundai moved the antenna to the roof on theirs, so it's not the same van at all.

Looks like a Sprinter to me. Even the wheelbase and overall length are identical. But you are right about the antenna, can’t be the same van.

Looks a little like a new VW Crafter. Let’s see for how long GM will hold to their framed van, they sold their Opel so I don’t know how easy would be to bring Opel Movano.

George.

If I was building a van from scratch as a manufacturer and wanted to enter a fresh market I would seriously considering a supply contract an existing manufacturers of vans. These all to be supplied under license and badged for my product accordingly.

This cuts down the amount of development costs.
Its done frequently with big trucks and even VW has done this with one minivan body & Chrysler being the supplier.

Yes, it appears VW, Hyundai, and others are licensing the “old” 2014+ Sprinter technology since none of them sell in sufficient quantities to justify the development costs. That way everyone involved benefits with MB hoping to distinguish itself with its upcoming 2019/2020 redesign.

Just because something LOOKS like another vehicle doesn't mean it's copied. It's called convergent evolution. There's really only one shape that works for a full size van, so they're all going to look the same other than minor sheet metal stamping differences. The wheels are going to be in the same place, as is the windshield, doors, seats, grill, bumpers, they're going to be about the same height and width, etc. And often people forget what came first; I remember someone telling me that Jeep "copied" the Hummer when they released the new model Wranglers that included a 4-door. I guess they had never seen a Jeep prior to Hummer's being on the market!

BUT, yes, licensing something already available and re-branding it is the cheap way to go. They still make T1N Sprinters in Russia under another brand name.

I found the problem... GVWR is only 3500 kg (7700 lbs). With a curb weight of 4900 lbs, that limits the capacity to 2800 lbs. Not a big deal to most, but I need a non-dually with greater than 3,000 lb capacity, and my T1N fits the bill with a payload capacity of 3200. Granted, if the economy conversion is correct, I think I could make due since its listed as getting nearly 32 mpg hwy.

No front wheel drive, no AWD or 4x4. See nothing offered that is not already here.

I have been driving RWD vans for 36 years, getting along just fine, even in the snow, the mud, etc.

Mercedes can keep the 4x4, overcomplicated, expensive to own and repair niche market.

Don't matter to me. :idunno:

Euro press says that new Crafter is totally in house developed. Look at it closely and you can see the differences from a Sprinter, where the previous Crafter was definitely a Sprinter with a VW front clip. The fact that it comes in FWD, RWD, and 4Motion AWD, says this is a very different platform than the present Sprinter.

The Crafter had the same sheet metal but a different powertrain than the Sprinter. The redesigned Crafter will now have it's own distinctive sheet metal stampings.

Had a sweet VW 5 cylinder diesel, that I would have killed for! Who was the forum member back in '08, who bought all the front clip parts to do a Crafter conversion?
