Towing Pulling

Hello to ALL,
My wife and I are considering buying a camper we can pull behind our SPRINTERS. I am aware of the max allowed towing capacity, but are wondering about the "REAL" capacity of the Sprinter. I have been towing a Golf TDI with ease and are wondering were is the true weigth limit. Especially if you go in the mountains. I would love to hear some comments / input on this subject. Also how much does it costs to ad the electric break feature to the Sprinter.

I drive mine at full capacity of #14990 total weight for a 3500. Truck at #9990 and trailer at #5000 and if you get off the interstates in some of the hills I have seen 15-20 MPH climbs. I would watch what you try to pull for that reason. Keep it light.

I tow an Airstream 19 foot Bambi trailer at 4000 pounds behind my Airstream Interstate class B MH. Pretty much maxed out weight wise. Any 8 to 10 % grades put me down to 45-50 mph and sometimes to 30-35 mph. Good news I still get15 mpg towing. jim

Not having a camper conversion will save several thousand pounds so pulling a 5000 pound or under camper should do it. The long wheelbase on the Sprinter is a real plus, be sure to get a brake controller and a weight distributing anti sway hitch if towing 5000 pounds or more. jim

Hello To All!
I have an 06 low roof,short passenger van that I just installed a class 4-5 equalizer hitch on that I want to
tow a 31ft. travel trailer with that weighs 9000lb. Breaking is not a problem since the trailer has disc breaks and
Speed is not much of a concern because I'll only us it in flat areas. A trans. cooler will be added and the wire harness hasn't been ordered yet.
What I am concerned about is the rear end temp.
What do you think ?

I think with camping stuff loaded into that trailer you're going to be more than double the tow weight allowed for a Sprinter. Even with my tolerance for pushing things, that's a bunch more weight. I've read where one of the concerns is not so much the drive train, but the frame design. I know if I park my 2004 2500 with one wheel in a low drain basin the back doors rack out of place to the point where they bind noticeably. That was never an issue for my 3/4 ton Dodge full sized vans that were rated up to 10,000 towing, even higher with options. Sorry, lecture over.

There is fairly inexpensive temperature monitoring equipment out there that could be used on your rear end.....your Sprinter read end, that is. This is from rlent's thread:
You certainly do go all the way when you do things. That sounds like a good set-up.

The way I would go about it would be to clamp a thermocouple with a worm drive clamp to a metal fitting on the transmission line and use insulation around it to help keep it accurate. I expect it would be fairly accurate in the summer even without insulation. That method avoids getting into the transmission fluid system, welding, etc. The eBay meter I show below also gives you an opportunity to have one more input and use the meter for other things.

I'd use Type K, Chromel/Alumel

because it's common.

...... that your concern is possibly misplaced .... it's probably not the rear end that you need to be concerned about, but the transmission ......

One thing to keep in mind is that, as Doktor A has stated, the torque converter clutch on the Sprinter's NAG 1 transmission never fully locks up (partial engagement only)

That would mean either: A. potentially higher temps due to the use of only a fluid drive (disengagement), and B. slippage, or C. both - both of these, either singly or in combination, would have the potential to create huge amounts of heat I would think .....
