2018 Sprinter update = Nothing new. The 2019 gets the total redesign

I wanted to give you all an update on the 2018 Sprinter.

I have been holding off on buying the 2017, as I had heard rumors that the 2018 was going to be the "perhaps" total new refresh.
___________________________________________________________________
I was with some of the heads from various Mercedes Sprinter departments a few weeks ago and here is the news.

1. There will be absolutely NO new design or updates to the 2018 except for a larger tow capacity.

I was shocked to hear this, and asked a few times, in various ways to all members, if this was 100% accurate, as I needed to buy 4 Sprinters for a big film shoot and 4x4 would be needed, and we had been holding off for the "new" 2018 to make this purchase.

And they 100% confirmed it. There is no new 2018. In addition, the 2018 Sprinter will NOT be made in the South Carolina plant.
Also, the 2017 will be the Last year for the Mega or Super High roof. Orders end for the Mega High in November. However, the Mega-Super high roof will be still be available in Europe for at least 2018.

This along with all of the above was confirmed with the #1 man in design out of the German plant.

However, the 2019 will be the All NEW Generation-3 Sprinter.
The 2019 will be built in the U.S. South Carolina plant.
The 2019 Gen-3 Sprinter will have far better MPG and a long list of other updates. (Auto sliding door, new dash, etc.)
To the best that they could quietly admit to, the 2019 body will not change from the current body, neither will the size rim/tires.

The 2019 Gen-3 4x4 will not be available until mid 2019 or even possibly September, as the new plant has to first fill all the 2x4's. This 4x4 2019 delay did not totally make sense, but I took a mental note so you could know.

If you have any other questions, please let me know. But I think the above will make many who were holding out for this hopeful new redesigned 2018, know that they 100% have to wait until 2019.

They also said that the 2019 news/images, etc. will be released around September of 2018.

Very Respectfully,
Erik.

It sure looks like the EPA will have a lot to say about any of these release dates and products.

What EPA? Didn't Trump defund that?

So help me out please someone. What is the height of the rear door opening on the Mega roof? Is the next size down the same size opening?

Thanks

Checked the configurator. Says 72.4 for both. I can live without the Super high roof, if it doesn't fit thru the door its wasted space and worse mileage for me.

If that dimension is wrong, please set me straight

This is consistent with the news releases on the new plant in SC. It won't be ready until late in 2019 and all reports said they would build the next generation Sprinters at this USA plant.

Also The mega super high roof has been on and off before in the US market.

The Mega High roof has the same door opening as the standard high roof.
The Mega High roof is created by simply cutting off the metal top part of the roof, and adding a plastic shell. So the door opening never changes.

The Mega High Roof as of now, is 100% off the market in Nov. of this year due to next to no sales in the Mega High roof in the U.S.

You are right - not much demand in USA for fiberglass mega roof. But Advanced RV has converted a few for tall owners.

Not so good news in the Sprinter world. I thought the spy photos were released for a reason well I guess I will count on a hybrid Sprinter coming, that will give them plenty of time. Time to start making the T1N comfortable in the meantime.

Late in 2018 or 2019? I thought 2018 given that it's a 2019 model.

No changes for 2018. Not even sure when 2017 will convert to 2018. Be looking for only 6-cyl diesel for the near future. 2019 will be new plant. TOTAL overhaul and I think will blow away some people with the changes coming....

Over the 7500 lbs current limitation, or only lower tow capacity models would get an upgrade? Hopefully they raise both the 15250 lbs gcwr and the 7500 lbs tow rating

Hopefully the MY 2019 4x4 will be ready for summer 2019.. releasing it "late 2019 or even 2020" would be kind of crazy for a 2019. Already MY2017 is quite late from emission approvals.

Hi,

Thanks for the great info. I was told that window options and radio delete options are not available for 2018 cargo van. Can you confirm this? Any more info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Peter

You'll be able to get the windows, but it will require laminated glass option (F43).

Radio delete option will not be available because backup camera is now standard. EN7 (Audio 15) is required for the display.

Thanks for that. I have a 144 4x4 high roof on order as a Winnebago.
The brochure explains why some things that seemed to be optional are now required.
