Animas Automotive in Durango

I almost had my Sprinter towed to Animas Automotive before I decided just to order an EGR valve from EuroParts. Animas Automotive quoted a new EGR valve for my 2006 3500 for a little over $500.00 and gave me an over the phone guess of about 2 hours labor to replace. To be fair this was a phone conversation and not a written quote after a vehicle inspection. The new EGR valve/gasket from EuroParts cost about $460.00 with overnight FEDEX shipping included.

If I had't thought to bring along my Autel 802 Scanner on the trip I would of had it towed to Animas Automotive as they were the only game in town. The Scanner pointed to an EGR Circuit failure. My guess on a bad EGR valve turned out to be correct. I was lucky it wasn't something else.

I also called the Durango Dodge dealership. They said they didn't work on Sprinters but did sell parts for them. They wanted over $1,000.00 for a new EGR valve!!

By avoiding a computer scan at Animas to find the problem, a tow and labor/parts I figured I saved at least a few hundred dollars.:bounce:

Are you saying that Animas Auto is too expensive?

If so, I might encourage you to think about how they have to make a profit to run a business, and the cost for them to survive includes their overhead (wages, taxes, building, utilities, insurance, etc. etc. etc.).

I do most of my own work to save money, and comparing my "free" labor to a shop's labor rate isn't fair.

Now.... Dodge charging you $1000 for a $500 part, and all they are doing is a paperwork transaction seems like gouging to me!

Oh - got it!

A friend of mine had a theory: For his own auto repairs, he often had to buy tools that he didn't own. But, he saved money by not going to a shop plus he now owns a lot more tools!

Passenger side window regulator failed while I was in Durango. Checked with Animas Automotive to get it repaired. They wanted a little over $800.00 to replace the regulator. Said to heck with that and duct tapped in a piece of plexiglass to suffice until I get home.
