rotella 15-40 vs mobile 1 ESP 5w40

Hey guys through internet searching it seems like mobile 1 ESP 5w40 was the best oil for the sprinter. Calling around to the oil service places most carried rotella 15-40 for the sprinter oil changes. Any thoughts if this oil is good enough?

Rotella does not meet MB 229.51 so it is not recommended for a 2007 or later Sprinter (primary reason is that it does not have sufficiently low SPLASH numbers to be compatible with maximum DPF life.)

Assuming you don't have an OM647 engine in your 2007, 15W40 is 100% wrong and Mobil 1 ESP 5W40 is 100% correct and ignore the following sentence.
If you do have an OM647 Engine in a pro-built RV 5W40 is great as long as it has MB approval # 229.3 or 229.5, so 229.51 isn't needed if Om647, but 15w40 is still wrong, some use cheap Rotella T6 5w40 with no problem

0w-30 meets the latest specs. Oil test on a 260000 2008 showed just fine with life left at 10,000 miles. Find it on sale at Napa if you can. Fuch's still makes 5-40 that meets spec. Rotella 15-40 isn't synthetic either. There are nine million threads on here about oil.

I'm having a hard time finding a place that does oil changes and carries the mobil 1. is it mobile 1 specifically or will any 5W40 oils be sufficient?

Either DIY, bring your own, or have a dealer do it. Dealer specials are not always highway robbery if you shop carefully,

It does not have to be Mobil 1, but it does have to have the MB approval number listed for your engine, 229.3 or 229.5 for a 2.7L,
or 229.31 or 229.51 for a 3.0L, those you can get at Walmart and bring to a changer

Is your 2007 a gas 3.5L? a diesel 3.0L or a diesel 2.7L ?

3.0 disel

I didn't get a owners manuel with my sprinter so i'm going to have to track down that info

Nope. Not good at all for your V6 OM642 engine with DPF. You don't want to plug up your DPF $$$.

You need a low ash formula.

As has been stated. MB229.31, MB229.51, MB229.52 should be on the label.

Some say your choice needs to be listed on Mercedes BeVo. Personally I'm good with "Meets or exceeds" MB specification XXX.XX, but that likely doesn't apply to the oil you will find in North America. The brands that you will find on the shelf will likely be listed in BeVo.

Look for Mobil 1 ESP or Valvoline MST and then look for the MB spec to be listed on the back label. There are other low ash oils in North America. They are not generally common though.

ACEA E9 oil is low SAP.

Looks like there is a difference in esp vs turbo diesel non esp.

however i'm finding that the esp 5w-40 has been discontinued and replaced with esp 0w-30 that is MB229.51

0W30 is the new replacement, it's great as long as it says MB229.51

To add.

There are many different Liqui-Moly 5w-40 formulations.

Some meet MB specs, but not all. Choose wisely.

A sampling.

Liqui Moly 2041 Premium 5W-40 = MB229.3

Liqui Moly 2332 Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40 = MB229.5

Liqui Moly (3701) 5W-40 Top Tec 4100 Low Ash Synthetic = MB229.31

All the above are fine for a T1N 2.7L 5 cylinder in-line diesel. Only the MB229.31 is good for the NAS aka NAFTA 2007 3.0L V6 diesel (with DPF).

ANY and ALL oil that has the proper MB specification is fine to use. ** Given the proper MB spec and viscosity I would next defer to price.

** Coupled with the correct ACEA Euro standard compliance I expand my use to those oils that include "Meets or exceeds" a given MB spec printed on the label. It does cost a manufacturer money and effort to be listed on the MB BeVo site. The MB market is relatively small for some manufacturers so maintaining a BeVo listing provides little value.

Curious...

Do you have a smoke after each posting you do in an Oil thread?

I hate adding to this oil chatter but I do read much of it with glee!

Here's a test paper of sorts which might cause even more forum chatter with what the Auzzies would relate to as Galah stuff!
Note at the bottom there is some reference to Penzoil Ultra--which by the way the Dodge Mopar line sells for Sprinter oil changes.

Read on and be prepared to be mystified--maybe!
