I think I found a heater booster, but no switch

Ah ha! Now I know! I have the timer (without the knob) and the Cargo option! Eureka!
Autostaretx Dick comes through again. :clapping:

And again I'm reminded that RTFM does work.

P.S. - I believe that this is the first time anyone on this forum has indicated that they have an OEM Aux Heater with the non adjustable timed control switch.

I have neither the auxiliary heater switch nor auxiliary heater timer, yet have espar that is controlled by the bowtie switch. I bought the van used, but with only 20k. Other than an added tow hitch and some spliced in wiring for it under the dash, I have not seen any signs of repair or modification. Are both those controls "optional", or is one or the other always included with the espar?

I STILL haven't done the "run espar with engine off" mod, and am leaving for the mountains in an hour or so! I haven't had any problems starting in the cold for years, though. I define "cold" as anything below 15f.

the "run espar with engine off" mod is for human pleasure. Run it a bit and avoid scraping the windshield. Run it while you wait for an hour for your kid to be done with practice.

The Espar controlled by the Bacon Bowtie is the Booster Heater. Its sole purpose is to supplement heat to the engine only while the engine is running. With no other OEM controls present, you have the OEM Booster Heater.

The Espar controlled by the programmable timer, and now apparently the "Run for up to 2 hours" manual switch, is the Aux Heater with Bacon Bowtie is the HZ9 HEATER BOOSTER, DIESEL. With the optional H86 TIMER FOR HEATER BOOSTER the HZ9 HEATER BOOSTER, DIESEL can be operated whether the engine is running or not. That means that in addition to being used to supplement the engine heat in extremely cold ambient temperatures, it can also be used to pre-heat the engine. The convenience of pre-heat helps with cold weather starting and also, as ECU mentioned, for defrosting the windshield and/or keeping warm while in the van without the engine running.

My 2006 Aux Heater HZ9 HEATER BOOSTER, DIESEL controls include the program unit down by the shifter and also has the Bacon Bowtie to activate a Booster Heater operation. Apparently the Speed Racer Aux 2 hour run switch does not always have the Booster Heater Bacon Bowtie feature (but it could have been ordered as an option). Edit: Does the lack of Bacon Bowtie make Cruisndiesel's heater a true Aux Heater?

It would be interesting to know that when the Aux Heater is already operating, if the Speed Racer switch will keep the heater operating during an engine start operation. There are a couple scenarios where I suspect that it will not. One would be that the OEM MB controls are interlocked to shut the Espar down when the engine is started. Another possibility is that the 12 volt system voltage is dragged down enough during starting power draw that the Espar control module sees the dip in voltage and disables the heater on undervoltage monitor.

My DPDT Switch REST DIY Booster Heater modification can be used for multiple 30 minute intervals by just hitting the REST button again after timeout. My experience is that even at -5F and a bit lower ambient temperatures the 30 minute DPDT REST run time cycle is enough to pre-heat the engine sufficiently.

I have the now famous "bacon bowtie" OEM booster heater. If I do the mod to run the booster with engine off I need an electric coolant pump. Does that exist in combination with the OEM booster, or does it rely on a engine run collant pump?

There is an Aux water pump in the system too. When you use REST, it uses the pump to circulate engine heat into the cab for 30 minutes. The easy mod for the aux heater is to run the espar as part of this system.
The aux pump is a small pump mounted on the firewall. You'll want to make sure this works. Mine was not working and I was impressed that REST would heat my van for 30 minutes rather than about 2 minutes of warm and 28 minutes of cold...

As far as running across the engine start, I found that it would do that if you had the bacon button on since power would then continue. Or if you provide your own power source to the espar trigger wire. I purposefully wired mine so the mod would NOT function once the ignition was on.

I have the switch on the console and I run the aux htr to warm the engine (not to warm me) because I have no working glow plugs (and don't want to risk changing them).

The "Speed Racer switch" (so cool to have a switched named after me!) does, indeed, keep the heater operating during an engine start operation. The timer display changes from showing how much time is left to the time of day, but the aux heater continues to work. In response to a previous comment, the cargo (or rear) fan does not operate when the engine is off while the aux heater is running.

Attached is a photo of my timer, clearly showing the Speed Racer switch (woo-hoo!), for your edification.

This is clearly cheating. You can't say you have espar. Way too confusing. We're talking auxiliary heater, booster heater, and REST. Espar? Where's that come in? Hey, wot?

I am Sprinter. Resistance is futile. You will assimilate.

And another thing, my stock wagon (as opposed to cargo) Sprinter has the Speed Racer Aux 2 hour run switch, as well as fully operational Booster Heater Bacon Bowtie feature. Please see attached photo of same (pardon the finger).

It's all good!

A guess.

My 2004 and 2006 data cards both show the Booster Heater option.

2004 = HZ9 HEATER BOOSTER, DIESEL

2006 = H86 TIMER FOR HEATER BOOSTER
HZ9 HEATER BOOSTER, DIESEL

Both of my Sprinters have the Bacon Bowtie switch. The 2006 has the program timer.

My interpretation is that if you have have the Bacon Bowtie switch then your Sprinter was ordered with the HZ9 Booster Heater option.

If you additionally have the Program Timer Unit by the shifter then you have the H86 TIMER FOR HEATER BOOSTER.

If you have the Bacon Bowtie switch with the Speed Racer 120 minute switch then you have some Hxx "SWITCH or FIXED TIMER" FOR HEATER BOOSTER.

With no Bacon Bowtie switch then your heater is some sort of a Hxx Auxilliary Heater variation.

I have no idea what exactly the Hxx HOT WATER ADDITIONAL HEATER is exactly. My 2006 has the rear passenger area heat exchanger and fan with duct.

2006 has:
H12 HOT WATER ADDITIONAL HEATER
H13 ADDITIONAL HEAT EXCHANGER, REAR

My 2004 doesn't list any "HOT WATER ADDITIONAL HEATER" so it doesn't seem to relate to the Booster Heater.

I have seen some data cards with only "H12 HOT WATER ADDITIONAL HEATER" and no other option listed (eg - REAR).

As someone quipped, "Clear as mud.".

As an aside.
Both my 2004 and 2006 list: KL1 FUEL-LEVEL SENSOR FOR AUXILIARY HEATER. so perhaps the low fuel cutoff isn't just tied to the Low Tank warning even though my 2004 Booster Heater cuts off when that warning lights up.

My data cards raw text copied and pasted.
Thanks goes to Sailquik Roger for supplying them to me.

Not wanting to pass an opportunity to add some confusion, my '06 data card shows:

HDBP Front Auxiliary Heater
HDC Rear Auxiliary Heater

At one point, I knew what AMJ comprised, and I will endeavor to re-discover that and will post. Not today, though. I have no KL1, fwit & fyi.

The data cards with only alpha codes for the various installed equipment really does throw a monkey wrench into the mix. Previously all the data cards which I ever reviewed had alpha-numeric codes.

I'll stick to the alpha-numeric discussions because I'm basically lazy.

There are two, probably three, different codings for the stuff in the Sprinter.
One set is the "ordering" codes. This is what's in the Options book at the dealers, and on the invoice.
The Second set is the "build" codes, which is what appears in (at least the older) datacards.
The "probably third" code set would be things like "comfort group III" which would include groupings of some options at order-time.

Example: My dealer's invoice (with MSRP prices) has: (selected subset, alphabetical order)
AMJ Auxiliary Front Heating Group 706.00 <-- AuxHeat,7-day
BAQ 115 Amp Alternator 90.00
CMB Heated Driver Seat 136.00
GEC Front Left Side Slider Window 292.00
GEW Front Right Side Slider Window 292.00
GXK 2 Additional Keys 68.00
HDC Rear Auxiliary Heater 402.00
----------
My datacard has:
FY6 CENTRAL LOCKING WITH RADIO REMOTE CONTROL NAFTA
FZ9 TWO ADDITIONAL MASTERS <-- extra keys
...
H12 HOT WATER ADDITIONAL HEATER
H13 ADDITIONAL HEAT EXCHANGER, REAR
H16 SEAT HEATER FOR DRIVER
H86 TIMER FOR HEATER BOOSTER
HZ9 HEATER BOOSTER, DIESEL
KL1 FUEL-LEVEL SENSOR FOR AUXILIARY HEATER
....
M35 14 V/115 A ALTERNATOR
....
W18 LEFT FRONT SLIDING WIND. IN SIDE WALL/SLIDING DOOR
W19 RIGHT FR. SLIDING WIND. IN SIDE WALL/SLIDING DOOR
-------------

So "BAQ" became "M35", "GEC" and "GEW" became W18 and W19

(there's perhaps a tiny bit of sanity in that the Order codes starting with "G" are about Glass, and the Build codes W are Windows)

... i need a drink...

Alas, WDGS 16X6 Steel Wheels & WLBS Steel Spare Wheel in the build code. Arghhh!
In the "three-letter" days, Build codes for wheel-related things started with "R"

(i was tempted to assign it to "Rolling Stock", but German for Wheel is "Rad")

Guys I need guidence too.
It appears I have no timer or wiring for a timer that may have been removed.
The hack for boost heat anytime from back in 2011 sounds doable and I'm up for the challenge however will it work without a timer set up? Will it work from just the additional switch to the dash ATC?
Ive yet to get my Espar to fire at all.
Checked the coolant pump and it works (also in REST mode) the dosing pump works w/supplied test 12v -hose was broken so that's been repaired. I have the bow tie red indicator light on when engine is on and/or when engine is running. No fire. Does the van need to be rolling at speed?
Cold w Plenty of fuel.
I have load voltage out from under the drivers seat fuse block for Boost heater main and D+
The more I read your posts the more confidence I gain but not just yet.
I'll do a video if this works!

I will be reading any replies you get!

I am in a similar position here in the UK. Have the bow tie switch, red led comes on, heater is there under the bonnet, but it doesn't come on. I am also looking to add the 7 day timer to mine.
