NCV3 Identification, Miles, Months and Opinion

2014 144" wb hi-top crew model, purchased new (special order because of the options and because I wanted the burgundy color). Slightly over 171,000 miles, OM-642 (v-6), equipped with lots of options (aux. coolant heater, lighting package, parktronic, etc. etc.) This forum was invaluable when I was contemplating which options to include, which engine, etc. Aftermarket equipped with sliding door partition, shelving, bins and workbench for my HVAC/R/restaurant equipment service business (now retired from that, contemplating converting to a camper). Absolutely love the van; by and large has proven extremely reliable despite the extremely complex engine electronics. I'm convinced that the engine is good for a million miles, provided the electronics hold up! Bad rust issues on rocker panels beneath front doors, caused by careless "mechanics" at Town Fair Tire in Hyannis, Ma. who misplaced the lift arms when doing a rotation and balance. Rear quarter panel likewise rusted through due to careless aftermarket work truck shelving assy. installation , dented panel from the inside. Also, paint badly faded on one side from being parked in the same place with sun exposure. Getting ready to drop $5k to remedy all of this, but this van is worth it. I had it outfitted with a Webasto Airtop 2000 Diesel heater when the racks were installed; one of the factors which makes this van a pleasure to work out of and also I love doing long road trips in it. The entire exhaust system-cat convertor, DPF, etc.-replaced as a result of a lawsuit (unjustified in my opinion) in early 2022, so it has a new lease on life; that job would have cost about $5600 if I'd had to pay for it. I must say; the powers that be have ruined the legendary simplicity and reliability of the Diesel engine, but Mercedes has done a good job of making these systems as reliable as possible. The only improvements I can think of; it would have been nice if they had offered the 7-speed transmission (or, better yet, the current 9-speed) instead of the 5-speed unit standard with the OM-642 back then; but that's a minor quibble. I always look forward to driving the van, and hope to do so for years to come.

A 2017 2500 144” Crew 4x4 High
2017 4x4 w906.733 crew sprinter. 144" high roof

Purchased in early '23 with 29k miles. now at 51k miles. I changed oil at 36k miles, and due for another. Probably needs front brakes (getting a squeal). otherwise no major issues.

Running BFG K02 and has done 3 trips from Alabama to Alaska in winter. Tires and 4x4 make ice and snow a non-issue. Its a beast in 8" unplowed highway in the Yukon. Winter on the Alcan could be deadly with unreliable transport. The sprinter has never let me down.

Currently back in AK awaiting warm weather for a wash and some maintainer love. UncleRob!
@UncleRob

I have essentially the same rig as yours. Mine has 132,681 miles on it with a pretty good history behind it:

- lots of cross country travel, little stop and go
- exhaust system doing well FL <-----> CA avoids snow, ice, salt and FRIGID EMISSIONS CONDITIONS
- a couple of niggly SCR issues covered under standard and MB extended warranties which ran out in 2024 (nothing major since)
- power steering hose too short, DYI clamp replacement and frequent monitoring
- a major highway collision at 70 mph with a large mammal, rebuilt thankfully for better structurally, worse fit/finish

Overall, she's been a workhorse that's been the ultimate cruiser. We'll making another FL--->CA trek in a few weeks, with positive expectations.

Hope you and yours are also doing well,
