Hello from a "soon to be" LTV Unity TB owner

MarkCooperstein

2014 Unity TB
I am delighted to have found this forum and was beginning to think there was no digital outlet for owners of Leisure Travel Van products! I had looked at most of the offerings of Sprinter based class B+/C RVs and then I discovered LTV. I believe their product to have the highest quality but needed to see one up front and personal! To that end, I went to the Hershey RV show in Pennsylvania last week. I was impressed! So much so that I signed papers to purchase a U24TB model for delivery in 2014!

I got every option offered except the outside ladder. Now I'm wondering if I should have that added on just in case I need to climb up on the roof to check the solar panels. Anyone have any experience on thus issue?

Anyway, hello from Mark and Elizabeth Cooperstein in Big Stone Gap Virginia !!!

Congrats on the purchase. Wish I could have justified the NEW price, but my used unit has had no issues to have shaken out, so perhaps I am just as happy. The ladder would let you get up on the roof after you drive under a tree, like Dean did in the video for this year's model. Otherwise... Doesn't look like a roof I would wanna walk on, kinda smooth, and I hear which accident mostly kills men over 50 is falling off roofs. Mostly that may be my own RV as I have the Serenity that never had a ladder option and fear it's not designed for walking on, not sure if it will be damaged by being up there so I have not been.

If you wanna place to hang out with other LTV owners there are a few of us over on groups.yahoo.com/group/LTV_Serenity. A few Unitiers are there too.

I'm on my roof all the time. Don't like the ladder option though as it takes always from the smooth lines of the Unity. So I use a regular fiberglass ladder when I climb on top to cover or uncover the van. The roof is fiberglass with aluminum roof joists throughout. There are some factory videos on YouTube that show the construction process and are testimonial to the roof construction. Dean touches on the roof construction as he stands on the roof of a new Unity in this video: http://youtu.be/qsBQYHZmdXU

Ordered our 2014 without ladder... But after a downpour with debris flying around i decide to make an appointment for the factory install it.
I know it not as sleek with a ladder but i really like the idea to be able to check if solar/antenna and Dicor are in good shape...
Nice to clean skylights too!

Hello Mark and congratulations on your purchase. You will not be disappointed. We did order our Unity TB with the ladder and i'm glad we did. For me, getting on top is much easier with the attached ladder than trying to step off a ladder placed next to the coach...less chance for damage caused by a ladder tipping over onto the coach as well as less chance of damage to me. Again, that's just my preference

Welcome to the forum. Although it's not the most active RV forum out there, there is a lot of really good information to be learned here. Do you have your delivery date yet?

Mark:
I have a 2013 Unity CB and had the dealer add the ladder. It is just not save trying to transfer from a regular ladder to the roof of an RV. I have been on my roof many times and while the older I get the more difficult it is to do I would not even try it from a free standing ladder.

I have my Serenity parked in the driveway so I can see from the bedroom window when it's time to hose off the bird poop or wax the roof. One advantage of such a small RV, I don't need to get on the roof, I hose it off and have waxed it from the step ladder.

The Serenity/Libero makes me nervous to get up on it as the roof sections are held together by caulking. Walking on it might open the roof to leaks. I am sure it is structural somehow, but not having seen the construction I don't know where the steel is. I see it behind the cab, but where else it is I am unsure. So no weight on the roof for me, just a long arm to wax the roof every fall on the first cool, sunless day. Hmmm... That might be today.

The Unity roof is very solid. I've been on mine many times putting the cover on and off and checking things out. Always when dry though. I use a small extension ladder with padding against the awning. Easy on, easy off.

The paint protects the structure from damage and the wax protects the paint. I am actually looking and flexible solar panels with adhesive, so I didn't wax yesterday. I got in the habit with my last Sprinter RV that was just the Sprinter roof, only 8 feet in the sky so I waxed it to keep the water from pooling and the seams in the roof from leaking.

Getting bird poop and dirt off a waxed roof is EASY, hose it off...

hummmm... wonder if that is meant as a complement or an insult... :hmmm:

But to be honest, it has been a very very long time since I was a "girl."
Neither, just very surprised because it is mostly guys here and IRV2. Also girl is the opposite of guy. Most of us are far beyond the guy stage as well.

I consider the opposite of guy to be gal. And the opposite of girl is boy. True, we females are the minority in the RV world... but there are more and more all the time. :)

Sort of like there used to be few women in the computer world, but as they have gotten more reliable and just USABLE everyone is joining, not just the gear heads. My grandpops was one of the original build your own RV guys, had a company doing that for a while, has the patent on AC in a moving vehicle.

Then in my dad's generation RVs were from reputable companies, Winnebago was huge when I was a kid. The GMCs were everywhere, some of the coolest RVs EVER were being produced. His was a Dodge Sightseer, but that turd NEVER worked for more than a few miles w/o something going wrong. It lived in our driveway for decades as the place we keep the fire extinguisher.

Me? I am 3rd generation RV, it's in the blood. But there is zero tinkering, trying to get it to work, it just does. That leaves me to install LED lighting or hook an AppleTV up to the HDMI ports on the TV. RV life sure has gotten easier.
