Diagnostic Manuals?! Same as Service Manual or Not?

Hello all,

I have a buddy here in Guyana and his Sprinter 2005 T1N is giving him serious grief
(I'll post on that later and hope like hell someone can help us out there too)

However, first we have a running dispute about the existence of a "Diagnostic" or "Professional Workshop" manual. My years of experience as a mechanic tell me there WILL be such a manual for the Sprinter.

He tells me his extensive searching on the internet has produced only the owner's manual and the "Service" manual 2006-VA-Powertrain etc. He insists that manual must be the same thing as the diagnostic manual.

So which of us is right?

More importantly, if I am right and there is a third type of manual: Owner, Service & DIAGNOSTIC - then where online can we find it?


Really appreciate any quick-fire help anyone can offer:

We are entering the rainy season down here
and he needs to get moving and off the Caribbean coast, down towards Brazil before he's stuck here for the next 3 months!

What content do you expect to *find* in the diagnostic manual?

You mentioned the "2006-VA-Powertrain etc." files.... those *are* diagnostic sequence-structured, keyed by error code.
the Service Manual is a single roughly-40-megabyte PDF file ... 2006-VA-SM.pdf
the Service Manual CD *also* includes the around-a-megabyte-each Powertrain, Chassis, Transmission and Body diagnostic manuals, of which "2006-VA-Powertrain.pdf" is one.

There are also "Training" manuals (Aqua Puttana/Vic posts pages from them to answer questions), but those are explaining how the systems *function*, not step-by-step diagnostic procedures. (you might call them "theory")

I have all those sections PTrain, Chassis, Transmission, Body etc : He found those online.
The complete Service manual (1200+ pages)

BUT, I am after DIAGNOSTIC / Troubleshooting step by step testing guidelines.

In all the 1200+ pages of this Service manual, and certainly not in the standard Owners's manual, I cannot find such a diagnostic table/process.

I am used to finding that in the Diagnostic/Workshop manuals for vehicles I fix.

For example the Toyota Land Cruiser or the HiLux SR5 both have three manuals owner, service and 'Automotive Repair Manual'
:The third one and it's step by step diagnostics is what I need for the Sprinter.

That way I can systematically work through all the possible causes and solutions for his loss of power and 0404 + 0087 error codes.

So, ever seen such a thing as the MB/Freightliner/Dodge T1N Sprinter Repair/Workshop manual?

You're not going to like the answer:
The first problem is that you're using a ScanGauge instead of a true Sprinter-compatibe diagnostic scanner
(either an MB Star system, a DRB-III with MB/Sprinter parametric module (which provides diagnostic tree info) or a DAD (Dr A Diagnostic device))
Secondly, you're using a 2006 manual for a 2005. Due to MB/Chrysler's poor creation of the US manuals, there are probably some discrepancies in the diagnostic nitty-gritty bits (but yours may be not-so-deep as to fall into that swamp).

The P0404 and P0087 may be either "generic" codes or mis-translated messages.
Here are the "generic" translations:
P0087 Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low
P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected
P0404 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control Circuit Range/Performance

If we assume they're correct messages, then (for example) the Fuel Rail message may really be a P2017 (or P2019) code in the Powertrain manual.
The "P0401" EGR message may really be a P2355 in the same book.
Using *those* numbers, you've got diagnostic trees (P2017: page 117 ; P2355: page 150)

Added: slightly more Sprinter-specific translations:
P0087 Fuel Rail/Sys Press-Too Low
P0401 EGR Sys Failure
P0404 EGR Pos Sensor Rationality

Also: verify that it's a "P" in front of the 0401 and 0404.
If it was a "U", then they'd mean:
U0401 Invalid Data Received From ECM/PCM
U0404 Invalid Data Received From Gear Shift Control Mod(ule)

Even worse, America appears to be the only country on the planet that offers that WIS access to non-dealership employees. They police this by checking the credit card info. If the original poster is in The Co-operative Republic of Guyana, and has no America-billed credit card, the registration for www.sprintertekinfo.com will fail.... much like my attempts to register for Daimler CBT courses offered to European business-persons.

Your on the wrong end of the Atlantic pond. EPC WIS Data Mercedes-Benz book of referencing as to your model is not NAFTA generic coding:
The most super expensive system I have seen on a Global basis of inequity is Canada? Africa is the most affordable but it's the same as European sector, you have to be sponsored into virtual online data with Mercedes got ten grand $U.S Or $AU?

Vic has lots of T1N information in print that he converts to digital format and posts regularly.
www.alldatadiy.com has all the Dodge service information and they don't care where your credit card is billed.

Yeah, if you're dead set on Mercedes-Benz/Daimler info, you're up a creek. You can get parts shipped anywhere; but like Vic says, that's an inefficient way to go about solving a problem.

Post a VIN. We'll harvest its data card if we can (haven't met a VIN that can't be "carded," but you never know) and if it's a "Dodge" engine, www.alldatadiy.com will have enough service info to help out.

Freightliner Sprinters were part of DaimlerChrysler Vans of North America, LLC.

Freightliner dealerships after 2003 used the same computers to order parts and for service info as did Dodge dealerships.

For all intents and purposes, a 2003-2009 Freightliner Sprinter is a Dodge Sprinter with different logos.

Please double check the VIN. I think something's amiss with the string "WDYPD7441X55778695" - like it's a character long or something.

The 2002 Freightliner Sprinters also use Dodge part numbers (mostly because they are 99.995% the same as the 2003 Dodge Sprinters). There was some agreement on standardizing parts between them by Mercedes. In 2010, when Dodge moved out of the Sprinter picture, things changed, as far as 2010 and later Sprinter parts are concerned, but 2002 thru 2009 Sprinters can use Dodge (Mopar) for ordering parts in the USA (ie. NAFTA Sprinters), no matter what the Sprinter is badged as (some early 2003 Dodge Sprinters were badged as Mercedes Sprinters - If you watch the Cable Show 'American Pickers' - that is one of those).

Both Dodge and MB reject WDYPD7441X55778695 as a valid VIN.
There is no "Freightliner" VIN checker.

Where was this built?
Is the date of manufacture on the vehicle anywhere? On NCV3s, the date of manufacture's on the drivers' side, on a plate, along with the VIN and some other info.

Can you photograph the VIN plate and post a picture?
