performance upgrades for 05 sprinter camper

my 05 is ok on the flats pulling 12' box trailer but if you don't catch it and downshit to keep rev's up it suck as it doesn't rwspond, seen adds for chips but don't know is right or other upgrades mine only has 75,000, looking for info, thanks

I strongly advise to avoid tunes. This engine does not have enough margin. Its already making 160hp from 2.7L. There are plenty of threads (including one by me) from users with heavy vans and tunes, who have cracked pistons.

The cooling system needs to be 100% for stock power. Once you increase power you will find yourself with excessive coolant temps in hot weather (>220F) and high EGTs. Stock this engine has high but acceptable EGTs, most tunes will push you over 1400F sustained in hot weather.

Keep these guys in mind. The stock transmission doesn't take kindly to heavy towing usage. They make more bulletproof transmissions and torque converters for when your's grenades.


No better performance, but shouldn't blow up.

Frankly, just go uphill at 40 mph and save the engine and transmission. It's only 5-10 minutes of a multi hour trip. It will go 80 on the flats. The cooling system has issues under high loads too. You can use the search to find hundreds of hours of reading on that.

The aforementioned NCV3 offered a 3.0 liter V6 that provided more towing capability.

Do you have a scanner?
Various things can greatly affect available power:

air leaks in the turbo-compressed airstream ... the ECU notices and stops trying to use the turbo.
Result: only half the rated power is avaiable
---------
Subtle failure of the Intake Air Temperature sensor... really weird lack of power in some situations.

How big (frontal surface area) and heavy is your "12 foot box trailer"?
(its length is its least important characteristic)
How loaded (GVW) is your Sprinter?

i did get code on last trip for air senser but cleared and didn't come back yet, it's a pleaserway so has air dam and flares so getting around 14 pulling trailer 19 without weighs about 7500+ from what I read
