Gas Sprinter P0420 code

Just wanted to check whether anyone with a gas sprinter has experienced a similar code, it’s Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1).

The vans a 2021 on 50k and it drives fine! Im worried it could be expensive, but also could be covered under the emissions warranty?

Yes, catalytic converters are covered under warranty. In the U.S., federally mandated emissions warranties cover your catalytic converter for 8 years or 80,000 miles (whichever comes first) against defects in materials or workmanship.

Good to know! Do they go bad that quickly or is there another cause? I had an intermittent misfire from a bad injector, and my spark plugs are due a change. Wondering if that’s a cause, is it the case that once they’re bad it’s hard to rectify without replacement?

Just don’t want to rock up at the dealership and they tell me your cats bad and it’s your fault and it’s not covered under warranty!

I would replace plugs before going to dealer.
They will seek any excuse, at your expense to not do any warranty replacement, so be proactive.
Just make sure you take copy of plugs receipt with you and make note in maintenance book about it.

Yes extended missfires , load the cat up with unburnt fuel which overheats it by torching the substrate,
Now you have LandRover/Range Roveritis with BMW being a close second.
These two sectors of the motoring public go into COMPL:ETE DENIAL /HIZZY FITS blaming the last shop that touched it, :devilish:
Then toddle off to their local municipal court filing a small claims court for financial relief, cos most have champagne tastes but beer budgets
Nothing new!!

"Misfire damages TWC" means "Misfire damages Three Way Catalyst"

Might be an expensive lesson.

Never had any codes for misfires, only P0201 Injector Circuit Open/Malfunction on Cylinder 1, Which is when I replaced the injector, no issues since, no other codes until the p0420. The engine light came on, but also has gone away by itself buts it’s come back again.

Got the van at 36k, replaced the injector when the code came at probably around 44k now at 50k.

Good question, I don’t know. It’s just got a light camper build in it, and usually carry around 2 mountain bikes. So nothing near it’s limit.

This is the issue.
No percived missfires--BUT your comprehensive monitor would have shown a drop out, maybe your O2 sensor monitor out, in OBD2 GENERIC OR GLOBAL.
In advanced disgnosis you don't always get a CEL on , but during a Professional routine service on modern vehiles a road test and comprehensive scan before hand over usually shows an indication of trouble in the making.
Like. or maybe LTFT's even STFT's, often big indicators something is amiss.

Just to mention that the purge valve frequently is one root cause feeding the intake system with fumes, or raw fuel that goes undetected.
The other a defective brake servo creating a lean mixture missfire that the O2's often do not have time to correct a "lean mixture missfires" or kerb side stumbling/roughness with high HC ouput which"can" poison the cat overtime .
Again a routine service with LIVE scan tool observations ":doing the knowledge"will pick up these defects before it results in expensive replacements to get E compliance and optimum performance

Thanks for all the feedback! The engine light has gone off again! Lots of stuff to look at, got some new plugs on the way, I'll put them in and give it another few 100 miles, and monitor things. I've got a big road trip coming up so I'll book it in for some diagnosis before that and see if they can see anything going, maybe some undetectable misfires or dodgy o2 sensors or something!

I'm actually starting to put my tinfoil hat on, thinking the issues are related to a reduction in fuel quality due to current politics around gas.

Now its OFF
Connect scanner and select OBD2, then see which monitors are open.;
DON"T go into platform selection.

Also, save yourself $600 and replace the plugs yourself. I just did mine this weekend. Just make sure you're using a thin walled socket for the plugs. Make sure you buy the OEM plugs too, don't cheap out on them. You should be changing them every 30k miles OR 3 years.

These gas sprinters seem to have a very delicate fuel system. I would also make the suggestion of running 91 from here on out too.
