OM642 block compatibility

Happy to join the forum. Haven't quite figured out search yet.

Wondering if a long block from other 2007-2008 OM642 vehicles can work in a Sprinter from the same year. Will I be able to bolt up my starter motor and other accessories from the Sprinter to the donor long block?

Thanks!

In short yes--BUT_---
Beware of Bitsa builders--and a few bodgers who are around wanting your money
Basically be aware the the cam(s) changed in /around 2010 in the the Sprinter
So you have to make sure the heads are from this SAME SPEC short block, making it a long block
Then above all verify you have,,nt got heads off another MB model previously installed
Does the donor LONG BLOCK have verifiable history with its heads?.

Thanks for the reply. Should have a verifiable history.

On a separate note, does this knock sound like bad injector/s ? https://streamable.com/yx7a9j

It could be--BUT
We have had two specmens in with defectivre heads/valves as i mentioned.
To fix it installed another from another engine shop!
Having changed the engine, we THEN DISOVERED THE R;/H HEAD ISSUE UPON TREAR DOWN of the displaced unit..
Wrong head/ wrong trick cams .valves hiitting pistons hence the knock.i

And we have yet other just rolled in!
Knocking a surging, CEL one brother built the engine for his Bro.
Brother totally dismisses any meaningful crtiique,.
Don't get involved in family disputes

Follow up question... Could a OM642 long block from a 2007-09 E320, R320, or Grand Cherokee work in a 2010-13 Sprinter? What changed were there?

Ivan has the answers. In a nut shell the cam shafts are different but because there aren't any journals perse, you need the heads and valve covers from your sprinter's engine.

I was checking on FCP and it seems the camshafts and sprockets are the same. I think it is the injectors, fuel pump, and ECU that changed.

Not what I was told but MB would be the true arbirtor of what's the same/different. There are many versions of the OM 642, GL verses Sprinter, and the engines have subtle differences year on year even for the same application.

It is possible that the new injectors have a different bore size, and that is why the cylinder heads may be different.
