Possible motor oil shortage

Welp, they were unable to fulfill the remaining 4 containers of my order, so they canceled them. I guess I got the last 8 containers in the country.

They warned it could take up to 10 days to see my refund which is pretty remarkable given they can take your money in a millisecond with the press of a button. :hmmm:
Wallyworld still appears to have plenty in stock, and still at $27.97 / 5 qt jug.

No agenda... but I just ordered a Blackstone kit for my next oil change... I'll be changing next week after 4k miles of highway (2.5k of which was towing 5-6k) from Tucson to Colorado and back... I will be anxious to see if anything worthwhile in results🤷‍♂️... You may convert me yet😶‍🌫️
Pay for the TBN and soot. That will give us more to argue about.

Reminds me of the human caused ammunition shortage.
Today I was in Costco and they were selling plastic 5 gallon gas cans, several folks had them in their carts. I hope folks don't start hoarding gasoline. My granddaughter's husband had one in the garage and in the hot Summer heat it ruptured. Thankfully there was no fire but what a stinky mess.

I linked before on this forum, where to buy steel, European style gas cans.
Bought 2 of them and when made in China, they are good quality.

I was doing oil analysis on my fleet of big trucks here at work. 12 and 15L ISX cummins engines, getting more hours on PTO's than miles on the odometers. You need to do regular analysis to watch for trends. A single analysis will mostly only show a very serious existing problem, not a problem in the making. I got pissed off when I started seeing a metal that wasn't in the metallurgy (don't ask which one, I don't remember) in one of my tests and they gave some completely bullsh*t answer as to why. And the level was randomly changing between tests without any reasonable explanation. I could have done better just asking AI. They didn't know what the hell they were talking about. Just useless chirps like "oil looks great, you can run it longer." "Iron is slightly up- you need to watch that. Could be the full moon though."

The head mechanic in our main shop said he stopped doing analysis and just started doing regular changes based on engine hours, like we were doing before. The annoying thing for me about doing the testing was you had to change all your filters at the normal service interval anyway - that was the big PITA, the oil drain and refill wasn't much more effort. And to not do the change and have the test come back saying you need to and then try to get that truck back in the shop. Ugh. Forget it.

On a happier note, I did an oil change on my van this morning. Stocked up on some extra jugs of oil too. Like all the discussion and rumors, my napa guy said their oil costs are increasing quickly. I got 7 liters of Liqui Moly cheaper than I was going to get Castrol Euro for my bmw (it got an oil change this week too).

I remember back in 99 when diesel dropped to .49 a gallon, i went to my local soda bottling company, grabbed several 33gallon drums, and filled them each day.
I bought about 600gallons before the price spiked back up to 2.00...
Still have a few hundred gallons when katrina hit in 05 and diesel hit 6bucks with shortages...
I felt like a genius.
No way idve done that with gasoline.
It is very volatile, and doesnt store well...

Anyone on here use Liqui Moly top tech 4200 5w-30? Auto zone has them on sale for 44 for a 5L Jug. Getting ready to do the first oil change on my 654. Auto zone doesn't list it as MB229.52 approved. But I went on liquimoly's website and they say its 229.52.

While I'm sure Top Tec 4200 would be just fine, I opted for Liqui Moly's Top Tec 4600 5w-30:

I was swayed by Liqui Moly's own description of this oil: "Designed for use in a variety of BMW and Mercedes-Benz diesel vehicles..." Liqui Moly also clams that it's made with turbos and DPF's in mind.

Don't be dismayed about the MSRP listed on the Liqui Moly website. I got 5-L jugs of this oil from Amazon for considerably less.

BTW, ignore what websites like AutoZone and Amazon say about fitment, especially for a Sprinter. They're completely whack. Just go by what is stated on the label.

After the first change at ~ 10,000 miles, I found that under essentially the exact same circumstances (climbing up to the Malad Summit on I-15 near the Idaho-Utah border), my OM654 oil temp ran ~ 20 °F cooler than it had two weeks earlier with the factory oil in it.

Just picked up some 4200 5w-30 from autozone. It does state the MB229.52 approval, They currently have it on sale for 44.99 for a 5L jug and i wanted to get my oil change done since the valvomax came in and i just passed 10k miles.

I will try and log my oil temps with the 4200 then track down some 4600 and see if theres a difference

Was the ambient temp, wind, and load/weight same?

Yes. It was even the same time of day, and in the same direction (northbound). Same type of weather (sunny and warm), and the load was identical as well.

BTW, I also experienced an overall improvement in mileage of 1-2 mpg. Not much in absolute terms, but measurable, and significant percentage-wise (6-12%).

I've always watched the oil temp during climbs, and while it used to exceed 230 °F at times, the temp never gets that high with the current oil fill.

I would not assume a product on Amazon is genuine.

It's hard to argue with results.
Not to ignore the fact that some amazon sales are actually fulfilled from the manufacturers Amazon Storefront. Not always of course, but not uncommon.
And plenty of legitimate resellers of quality branded products, for example Victron items sold by Bay Marine on Amazon.

I don't think ordering an item claiming to be a specific brand of motor oil, and something that appears to be motor oil coming to your door in a package that looks like the package that motor oil comes in is proof that the contents is the same as that genuine motor oil. An increasing trend in the retail world, in addition to fakery on Amazon, is to manufacture specific, lower spec versions of a brands normal product and sell it through various bulk sales operations, such as Walmart, Target, and Home Desperate. I know this sounds crazy and moronic on the part of the brand, and it very much is, but it is absolutely done anyway... sometimes with the same SKU!

When it comes to products like this, you are buying the vendor as much as the product.
