Ignition Mystery: Turn key Sometimes it starts Sometimes it doesn't.

Hello everyone,
Some folks have mentioned this topic before but with very little feedback. Anyway I'll get to the point.
The symptom is that when turning the key to start, (2011 SS Agile, 56000mi.) about half the time it starts and half the time it doesn't, just clicks once. Pull the key out stick it back in, move the shifter you know jiggle things around a little and she'll fire up. Once running everything is running perfectly.
I just had Mercedes check it out but they found no error codes and couldn't duplicate the problem. They said it started for them every time. So...
I'm not sure what to make of it. I'm hoping someone here has some experience with this issue and has a remedy.

I've never had that problem (AFAIK) so I can't help much... but I do know that once the key is turned to the start position --at least on mine and I suspect yours, too-- the "key in the spring-loaded start position" sends a signal to the computer (ECU, I presume) and it takes over -- in fact, the key can be released immediately and the start process will continue "on its own."

But the dealer should know this too. Almost seems like the switch might be flaky, i.e., sometimes not producing the signal to the ECU to initiate the start process?

2008 Sprinter 2500 170 Extended High Top 3.0L CRD
Replacing the copper braided engine block ground strap solved this issue on my Sprinter. Make sure you clean the attachment points. The strap cost about $12. After replacing starts every time.

1. Ground cable first to check. I even added a second ground cable.
2. Check control and load side of starter relay for 12V signal terminal 85/86 and 12V at terminal 30 and 87 to starter solenoid. Or swap two identical relays in the fuse box by driver foot well.
3. Check that +12V at terminal 87 is reaching starter solenoid post. Wire integrity check. Use a test light/bulb.
4. Starter on the way out.?
5. With a scantool you can check if the start system is enabled or not whenever van is started.
6. Check voltage drop between battery/alternator and starter cable. Y cable suspect?

Similar occurrence on my 2010, 180,000 kms (120,00 miles ?) turn key to start - no start - nothing, not even click.
Retry, sometimes starts second or third try, sometimes a few more. Been this way for a few years. I’m suspicious its related to battery as it happens generally when van has sat unused for awhile. Based on your age / mileage I assume yours has extended periods of standby.
