Warranty Claims being Denied by MB........... ?

Musings of Factory Warranty claims from about 20 years of zone rep report to factory base, plus latter day experiences of helping my customers get a modicum of customer saisfaction. with warranty support disputes.

1) An utterance from a German fleet manager "You British and Americans are so dis-organized I don't know how you ever won a war!"
2) Franchise dealerships focus is maximizing profits even at the expense of factories/brands they support..
3) With line #2 in mind that is why factories audit dealerships ever 60 months because being largely careless in nature we "know" whose ripping us off and slowly destroying customer brand loyalty . aka Also known as doing the top ten
4)A popular dealer/customer impression is that all displaced warranty related materials become factory ownership once a warrany claim is approved.
I once was arrested in Iraq for putting a sledge hammer through a -porous12 litre diesel block.
The authorities could'nt quite universally grasp the "Rulz is the Rulz" !:idunno:
Read Warranty policies in Arabic --Moh Hamide--Oh ham du ley lah! (Oh God in heaven!)

5) Engineering design and development in many cases determines warranty failure and repair cost difficulties.
If you over complicate it, and it fails warranty costs can destroy not only your support budget but erode customer loyalty.
As an example in the 1970's and 80's in the Euro trucking world the Volvo F88 , and my absolute repair favorite was the Scania 140 series even though I worked for an established competitor.
It gives rise to an expression,
It is said "that is hard to get to the top, but staying there in this compertitive world is far more difficult."
British Leylandf Trucks/Buses and IVECO are largely found in history books today.

6) Giving product and customer support.

Today as an Independant shop owner and like you a consumer I have my favorite brands.
I consider MB and Toyota/.Lexus as premuim products. the latter being just a bit better on cost.,build quality, parts availability and long term reliability..JLR products have a special experience and admiration by me, but for different reasons.
As I mentioned in this thread I/We have successfully got warranty compensation out of MB dealerships (one in particular by three ) for warrranty claim fudging.
To present a plantiff attorney with a comrehensive engineering report to bolster or reinforce a case it requires some comprehensive report compilation to present in court or at a deposion.
On average it takes about10 hours of investigation and analysis to complete an engineering document to present to an Attorney who is NOT technical, Hence it must be worded in such a way to be largely unstandable to lay people ,like a jury for instance.
SO HERE"S A STATEMENT WITH A QUESTION as largly a consumer base of consumer durables.
Having repaired the three MB units back to running "as new" and having got paid for the actual labor and parts involved.
YET, DO you consider the additional engineering support costs to to persue a sucessful claim part ofthe original repair order and hence an FOC activity?:
OR should a successful claiimant aka "injured party" compensate the shop for the additional input?
It perhaps explains why Attorneys have engagement fees upfront and the actual investigation to gain resolution is a secondary concern.
What are your views ?
Curious in Denver

Dennis

A few further comments with that wonderful expression
CAVEAT EMPTOR
In plain talk BUYER BEWARE!

No moreso can be buying engines (in this case) from dubious remanufactuers WHO seem to be based in Texas./Real life scenario this!
So in it came on the hook a T1N motor home, crank failed.
We gave the owner an estimate to fix using our in house re-builfd.
In short denied--TOO EXPENSIVE,.

Counter proposal.
Will you install an engine I supply?
Normally shop policy is NO, but goodwill has to play a part. so in this case YES, but it will be bare bones issue and we won'tfix anything FOC its all on YOU!. Knowing of course that NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED !

So replacement engine less ancilieries turns up in a crate and it get dressed and installed.
THEN!
"it won't start--Surprise Surprise!:devilish::dance:

Doing a bit of FREE investgation we determine the exhaust cam is out of time. Inform customer who informs supplier
By the wording onthe wriitten warranty if we touch it NO COVERAGE
If Owner does the same NO coverage.

Suggestion tis tow the rig to Texas for them to fix --Estimate $5500 to tow!
btw. A few phone calls trying to establish some sanity resulted in good ol Texas boy caustic abuse.
So not my fight not my fault!
Customer is between a rock and a hard place.
Now he's talking of Law suits--SOUND FAMILAR you folks reading this.k?
To resolve the owner has ponied up the money for us to put it "right" it now runs.
Glory Alleluja!

So now there it sits on our premises for the wheels to resolve. Out of our hands,
This jobbie will not get a prpfessional report to bolster a claim, nor will we give much more in FOC cooperation, as this was really a partial Freebee
Like I stated above
NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED
BUT
Forum readers! Beware of what you buy.:devilish::censored:

Sometimes people are constrained by available cash. Many vanlifers and others drink up the “million mile sprinter” koolaid. 🙄

Curious what was the difference in cost from you all in, compared to the owners cost with Texas engine and your shop doing the work?

Difference was about $4000.

As like everything in life , most of us are constrained by budgets, I am no exception.
This influences buying decisions in every cost of living aspect.
As I mentioned in past post the retail economy has tended to go more K shaped for most of us, so I understand

Unfortunately, that $4000 less didn't result in a running van, and it may wind up costing more than the Linden only solution.

I understand that the economy is not great for everyone. We waited till our 60s till we could afford to support a camper and it's maintenance. Our expectation was always thousands a year, comparing that to a nice hotel stay somewhere for weeks at a time it doesn't seem so bad.

If you keep the rust at bay, a Sprinter can absolutely last a million miles.

I did not say above that this is a cheap endeavour, however. What you need for a million mile car is a stout structure. Just about everything else can be repaired if you care to spend the money to do so.

In fact since the engine was customer supplied, and we did do some FOC diag work as goodwill, he did get charged for lifting out the cams and getting it into time..
The double whammy came on the road test being down on power, which was resolved by a set of injectors---- cahching Khaching !
Of course the supplier won't take the displaced core and refund the core charge at $ 850 (I think)
So that $4000 savings has been lost or well eroded in the process.
Oh Well! Adventures in fixing stuff
