Road Eateries

Every now and then, especially in the winter - we will do a LA trip and end up at Redondo Beach, I know there's better places, but we kinda like it:

Fresh sea food, open late, find a spot and watch the sunset...

We park the van in the corner and spend the night, if you leave before 8 or 9 the gate is open and you can slide out...

Spot the van!
Pier - love it,
Amazing dive bar at the end, and Capitan kids behind the parking which is nice place to eat as well

I'm also going to post some things from Chez CamperKitchen, made on the road somewhere. We often stop for the night and make something a little fancy:

Fanciest paper plates and plastic forks included. I will admit to cutting up some of the stuff ahead of time at home.

OK, in your dining experiences, it sure seems that someone usually likes a beer and someone else usually gets something else.

Is there any camping near any of these places?

Regards,

Mark
yeah, I'll drink bourbon or beer; Sharon will drink beer or something like lemon lime and bitters

these eateries were within walking distance from (or at) roadhouses or campgrounds or caravan parks... we tend to have a pub lunch in towns we visit.. there's been a few

eg. there's a caravan park out the back of Fitzroy River Lodge, Fitzroy Crossing, Western Australia so we ate in their eatery but we also walked a couple of miles into town for groceries and a look around

We had breakfast in Bentonville in a place called the Buttered Biscuit - I think there’s a few of them in this area but it’s family owned and not a chain. The food was great - lots of healthy and comfort food choices - they have an espresso machine and know how to use it. Service was also exceptional. We don’t go out much when we can camp but this place was worth the exception.

Just west of Oklahoma City and a few miles north of I-40 is a must stop for breakfast or burgers at Sid’s Diner.
Really small but we have always found a spot quickly (a couple of times at the counter) and it’s all totally top notch diner food!
Owners are always there and everybody is very friendly and seem to love what they do.

I hear Bentonville is a cool place, with a lot goin’ on and things to do.
Yeah I had heard it was sort of a Moab of the southeast - with a world class museum thanks to the Waltons - and after 3 days I’d have to agree. People are really nice here too and the weather is perfect - warm and a slightly humid. Highly recommended if you like to bike.

Mama Espinosa's in El Rosario, Baja [norte] is always a good stop before heading south through the Valle de Cirios and Catavina. Mama lived her entire 110 years in that valley.

Her lobsters tacos are renowned. I always stop there for breakfast on my way south.

On my way north, I generally keep going on to San Quintin for a couple of days stay on a beach loaded with sand dollars and shells to pick from. The Hoteles de Santa Maria with their onsite restaurant ain't too shabby either. Most rooms have a million dollar view of waves breaking top to bottom at any size of swell. Only dreaming could anyone make those closeout waves but they are spectacular all the same.

Back to Mama's. She has an interesting gift shop in the restaurant that features locals crafts with carved marble pieces, creative use of seashells, and so much more. There are Baja off-road race posters from over fifty years on the walls with lots of race decal stickers plastered on every wall space.

Next door is Antonios Pemex which everyone who goes by heading south should stop and fill their tanks. They are supposed to have the cleanest bathrooms in Baja.

I could go on and on. Now back to more good eating spots wherever you find them. Thanks all.

This the one?

Thanks RVBarry. The Mision Santa Maria has another hotel by the same name in Catavina.

After driving by for over fifty years, last year I finally got a room for the night in Catavina.

When heading south, I usually make a point to stop and take a walk among the house-sized boulders to stretch my legs and breathe in that rejuvenating desert air.

When the desert blooms, there are multicolored flowers to the horizon. It has been a few years since my timing has allowed me to enjoy a bloom, but when it does, it is out of this world.

Their Catavina hotel has a great restaurant onsite with a uniquely beautiful curved red brick ceiling that in itself is a thing of wonder and the food does not disappoint.

There is a mile long walking hike out the back to some ancient cave paintings that I hope to check out next time.

Sunsets out there are magnificent. So are the nighttime skies. Breathe deep and you can instantly feel the benefit of that pure desert air.

Wouldn't it be nice if sprinter-source could host a google map with all these recommendation locations embedded? I don't know if google makes that possible but I believe so. Not sure if it's feasible for the forum and keep it spam protected as well. One can dream.

And, of course, this would be useful for forum member recommended Sprinter specialists as well.
Google’s MyMaps can create maps with custom pins which can be added to its map after searching Google and finding its location, then Add to Map. It will add the info that Google has for it into the map.
Allows for custom pins which icons, colors, separate folders, etc.
Maps must be created on a computer.
Best visualized using Chrome for all the features.

I agree with the op that there should be a dedicated forum here for food. I could imagine a thread for each state and providence which would allow more organization by region.

I'm surprised I haven't come across on somewhere on the Internet. Does anyone know of one?
