Tesla Van

I had a chance to look at Rivian Amazon delivery van, it looked pretty slick IMHO, I know it's lacking the battery capacity to be able to be utilized as the camper van.

Here is the van prior to get Amazon exterior treatment:
We have these running all over the neighborhoods. A good use of the tech.

Yeah in a few yrs we’ll see the retired Rivians converted into urban campers.

Or storage containers.

I shudder to think of what replacement battery packs and drivetrain would cost for one of those.

Saw my first Fedex electric delivery truck in town today -- manufacturer unknown. I'd be surprised if Tesla wouldn't come up with one. It shouldn't be such a difficult design for a densely populated area. And it's not like the drivers always hustle for the entire time. Here is what happened to my Sprinter wheel speed sensor delivery from Amazon about 5 days ago.

I am waiting for the package because I want to install the sensor the same day. Happy to see that Amazon claims that driver will make 5 more stops before my delivery around 1pm. 20 minutes later the maps shows driver blasting by my area and finally stopping at Starbucks for about 20 minutes. Then deliveries for 1.5 hours in a nearby area. Then quick drive to a local weed store where the van stayed for 30 minutes (a discerning customer). Then driver goes to a dead-end road in the woods and stays there for 2.5 hours. Starts delivering in other areas again -- I stop paying attention. Get an email about delivery complete after 7pm.

That's a damn "Fugly" van and what's with Tesla and ridiculous windshields?
That one looks expensive. the asinine one they put on their car that wraps over the roof has a cost of over $3200 just for the glass!!!!

WTF????

Well an electric van might work for many, but I don't see many charging stations in ski area parking lots or BLM land... fake news or no, I'll pass

Thanks @r456 posting about the Tesla Van elsewhere.
Unfortunately I couldn’t pull up any info on the Tesla site, just the 404 message. So if you can post the Tesla Van link please do.

420mi range (I’m guessing that’s in ideal conditions and not running heat or AC?)
0-60 in 7.1 seconds ( yes please)
Top speed 99mph? (no thanks on going 99 in a van)

Imaging the fun in high winds… or will the battery pack provide stability?
We gonna need some ground clearance on that thing Elon.

And satellite beam charging capabilities…

I wonder if it’ll be capable off road like the cybertruck.
(google cybertruck hells gate if you doubt that. It’s 1.32 of 😮)

Seems like it’d be a great local surf van, soccer team/airport/hotel shuttle etc. Time will tell about other uses.

UPDATE: FAKE NEWS it’s all someones AI imagination 🫤
Ultimate adventure haha. No thanks.

Der Unverbesserliche.
As real as the new Roaster anyway. I doubt this see in production this decade. It’s too large for a personal auto. It’s a mass transit concept. But is it large enough?
Too few windows, not enough sight lines, no seatbelts. Also, generally the larger the vehicle, the more efficient it is in both energy usage and cost per rider capacity. I could see a bus like this being good for early bird, night owl, and sweeper runs, but not for any rational transit route for which a fixed or limited flex divertable routing makes sense.

A sweeper is the term usually used for the last run of the day. It is not intended to attract many riders; on the bus near my house the 'Sweeper' departs from Trenton at 12:26 AM, and from Philadelphia at 11:00 PM, with a considerable gap to the next runs: 3:09AM and 3:42AM respectively. They are there so that somebody who is planning on getting to Trenton in time for either the 9:30PM final departure of the RiverLINE interurban or the 11:18PM departure of the bus knows that if they somehow misconnect or run a bit late, they can catch a bus that will get them home, rather then overnighting in Trenton Transit Center (which has a lot of homeless and I wouldn't dream of trying it) or having to spend the considerable extra coin to summon an Uber.

They tend to run empty, as do night owls and early birds, and a small vehicle like this would make sense. But, for example, before the pandemic screwed up a lot of things, the RiverLINE ran at 15 minute intervals with a pair of Stadler GTWs with a max seated capacity of 150, and standing room for about double that. And before the pandemic they ran pretty full. Currently equipment maintenance issues have resulted in singe cars at 30 minute intervals, sometimes so full that another standing passenger can not be accommodated.

The most important thing with transit is connectivity, frequency, and reliability. You have those things, it doesn't really matter how sexy the equipment is.

I suspect that this will be part of Musk's urban tunnel transportation system.....
