Harbor Freight: Fortress Compressor Retrofit

Truck Compressors are expensive and loud. Not the prettiest setup but it works and only pull 300ish watts at 120v. In the photos I'm also running my diesel heater while I was working in the van so realistically getting about 300- 350 watts out of the compressor.

Suuuuuupper quiet. Unreal quiet. 20240324_225732.jpg20240324_225738.jpg20240324_225815.jpg

Tools needed: a grinder and some ingenuity. Some hand tools as well.

Additional parts: generic compressor fitting 1/4 bits and pieces to get it how you like it. Hoses and such.

Lemme know if you guys have questions.

Interesting. Great for small jobs. For the money can't beat it, after double checking the specs though you can partly understand the big price tag on the on-board air systems like ARB.

Fortess .7 cfm@90psi
ARB 3cfm@90psi continuous

But let us know real world usage. I have the 4.5 gallon, Husky compressor in my garage. Ultra quiet motor same as the fortress above just larger tank, and it works well, but that motor turns on quick. 3cfm@90psi

Very cool though. I could myself doing something similar.

That was kind of my thing.

Really wasn't any options out there for people looking for basic on board air for a reasonable price.

If you need it to inflate and deflate the vans tires, bike tires, a basketball, air mattress etc this is plenty. Probably even get a train horn to make a sound for a second or 2 haha

You can always get empty refrigerant tank and add it to the system. Plenty of room for such things under the floor

I have the same 1/2 hp 120 v AC air compressor. Did not modify it. Just fits in the cabinet below the refrigerator. Kept it portable so I can use it outside the van. Works fine for adding air to van and bike tires.

Run it off my 1000 watt inverter.

Most freon tanks now have a one way check ball to prevent back filling. Would need to modify tank valve/fittting. There are better options out there.
