Graywater tank retrofit plumbing

My sink is on the passenger side and my shower on the driver side. I did all my drain plumbing (sink and shower) with 1 1/2" pipes. I installed 2 p-traps than can be opened to either bypass the gray water tank or empty the pipes completely. My gray water tank has a standard 3" drain where you can connect a standard RV sewer hose. It's controlled by an electric valve. I've also added a non return valve on the tank.

The best temporary solutions tend to be permanent, see the ratchet strap holding my fuel tank to the side for years now... I don't think the hose will be a problem heat wise in the medium term. If it was my van, a wrap of aluminum duct tape would probably be the fix, if I did anything at all.

Just got caught by installing my Hepco trap such that the ribs are not at the bottom of my horizontal shower drain...worked OK until some crud built up

Got a deluxe drain screen for the shower drain, reinstalled 'ribs down'...test it in the Spring.

Here's how it turned out:

I managed to achieve a gentle downward slope all the way from the sink and shower drains (at least when the van is level)- not so much for water draining, but to aid any small solid debris pieces in their journey to the tank:

The rubber padded hose clamps are attached to the body into 1/4-20 rivnuts with long stainless screws, and 1/4" I.D. aluminum spacers of varied lengths in order to achieve the continuous downward slope. Very secure yet easy to remove, at the cost of being a little tedious to install.

Two years later… any issues with exhaust heat or coolant line heat?

Algae in the clear hose?

None.

If the van is significantly unlevel the drainage can be a little slower, but still adequate. I suspect a little bit of the gray tank capacity is temporarily lost in this condition, but I usually try to get level for sleeping purposes anyway so it doesn't come up too often.

The yellowing of the hoses on the right half of the pic is due to the a different hose material (silicone vs vinyl) which is that pale yellow color when brand new.

I would like to give a big shout out and say "thank you" to @sprint2freedom for posting a link to the tank he bought from Class A Customs. Before his post I did not know that this tank existed.

I had previously purchased the 7 Gallon T-0700 which would have worked nicely, although a little small.

I have AMP Research Powersteps on my Sprinter 144 so this tank that sprint2freedom used probably wouldn't work for my application because it is 48" long. However, Class A Customs also makes a smaller version called the UM-1500 which is a 15 gallon undermount tank that fits perfectly under my van even with the Powerstep on the driver's side. Going from 7 gallons to 15 gallons of grey water for my shower drain is going to be great! I think there is also enough room for additional plumbing like a P-trap or Scanvik drain. Gives me plenty of options.

Thanks again!20260423_162729.jpg20260423_162642.jpg20260423_162421.jpg

Second use of Class A customs - awesome pricing and seem pretty well made. I found the smaller 11 gallon matched up perfectly installed on drivers side to where I wanted my drain to exit and made connections very easy

Also to note these tanks are really quite easy to modify - To better fit my van which which has steps I used a heat gun to mold relief into the sides. Mounts using a couple of brackets I welded (see ourkaravan for inspiration ) that connect to the fuel tank and riv nut to seam

I somehow misplaced the first version I purchased so have a spare I should just get rid of. This is free to anyone local or if you really are keen I suppose I could ship (east coast so bear that in mind)
