That song came out just a few years after my draft lottery. No need to remind me of the lyrics. I was hanging out with a bunch of guys from the VVAW at the time. Gut wrenching stories, especially from Pothead, a LRRP.

It's a patriots job to not just support the country, but defend it against actions that threaten to destroy it. Of course, what constitutes such actions is really a matter of opinion. In the Vietnam era, many (most?) people agreed with the sentiment Springsteen was expressing in that song- or John Fogerty was expressing in his.

In this instance, there are a lot of people who disagree with the sentiment expressed in Streets of Minneapolis. I feel... torn by it. I think that the unfettered immigration and the wilful lack of upholding our own laws on the subject of immigration (as well as the lack of a reasonable immigration reform that both opens the doors of legal immigration to a saner level -more than legal now, a hell lot less than was happening illegally- but also fully enforces that opening so that illegal immigration effectively stops) was destroying our country. I also think that the methodology that ICE had been using, at least to a degree, was also destroying our country.

We must, essentially, make sure to extract the bathwater thoroughly, with the least possible damage to the baby in the process. We were removing the bathrwater, but perhaps not being careful enough of the baby.

I think the difference between a patriot and a traitor is the same as the difference between a terrorist and a freedom fighter: perspective.

That being said, I don't think anyone who is not actively acting against the manifest self interest of a country is a traitor. I think we have been throwing that word around too much of late, such that, like pedophile, it has come to mean something entirely different than what it meant when the crime was laid out.
