@Allcity510 Holy smokes that rig is beautiful! What color is that? I haven’t seen it before and love the shade of blue you picked. Also, what roof rack are you running? Looks really low profile like the aluminous one but I’m looking for more cost effective alternatives.

Where did you get the front winch installed? That’s another upgrade I didn’t do in the last van that I’d love to do in the next one.

@SION1771 The problems you’re describing with the toilet are exactly the same as mine down to the detail. I’m going to share this thread with a representative from DS solar where I bought mine. It sounds like everyone is having the exact same problems which is super disappointing. On an email thread he had told me he thought it needed some adjustment but it just seems weird that everyone is having the exact same issue.

Having said that, I agree that it is still better than the alternatives but it would be really nice to have the product do what it says it’s going to do — especially at the price point.

And such a great pro tip about the boat hatch! That’s exactly what I can do. Agree that one fan is more than enough power. Really great suggestion, thank you. What else have you got?! I love these pro tips that replace months or years of learning and cost!

Thank you!?????? It’s OEM brilliant blue. The roof rack is from Backroad Innovations. Contact them and tell them Ron with the blue Sprinter sent you. It comes with the light bar or Baja Designs Squadron lights. It’s honestly the best deal out there for a 170 ext. The winch I bought used on Offerup and installed it myself. Everything on the exterior I installed in my driveway. Lol

Now that you mention it, I contacted the reseller and he said try it at home to troubleshoot. I did and never got back to them - I couldn't find a predicable patter.

Want to make sure you saw the link to the Wrappon DC adapter I made - I edited my post to include that after the fact.

Boat hatch we got was a size 60 low profile (the largest standard size we found). https://www.imarineusa.com/Lewmar39960030.aspx Watching videos of people replacing theirs after 20+ years with the exact same size really impressed upon us - knowing these things have been a standard thing on seafaring vessels for decades convinced us it was the way to go. If you wait, iMarine has sales often I think we got ours for like 20% off. Hein does a lot of adapters for size 60 hatches had to do minimal adjustments to fit the van curvatures and the exact corner radii of the hatch we got. He said it was simple to do (sometimes he has to reach out to the manufacturers on more complicated ones).

They're also completely serviceable so if a gasket or acrylic or hinge breaks, you just replace that one thing.

Can’t believe you found the winch used. I’ll have to start looking for one. How was the install process? Do you have a build thread for it?

Man that color is so good that I’m seriously considering repainting a brand new stone grey van that color!!!

@SION1771 re: connector — YES! I’d seen that. The reseller I bought from (D4 Solar I think they’re called) had included a 12v adapter in my purchase price. I remember we had a thread on that; think you might’ve said they stopped doing that. So yeah, awesome to have a cheap alternative; crazy that they don’t sell it w/ a 12v by default, esp considering the price.

And thx for the link to the boat hatch. Looks perfect. Also a shoutout to @hein for all the incredible work you do! I bought one of those red rear door gap things from you awhile back but it went w/ my last van and I can’t find the link to it — could you share it here? We really appreciated having that for the rear airflow at night.

Hein bent over backwards for me on my hatch adapter due to my own stupidity, so I'm very appreciative of him and his team for helping out that.

I was glad to hear the installer of the hatch specifically said I needed to get a DIYVan adapter for them to install it. "I've already got one!" - glad to know they appreciate his expertise too. :)

Here's the Sprinter Door Prop from his site.

Let’s talk flooring!

I searched the forum for anyone who had talked about SmartFloor or Travois floors, and I’d love to do a pow-wow with all of you on what we’ve all learned about flooring, as I’m on the front-end of my next Sprinter build (as per the posts above).

I found posts by @senator2001, @COVAN-19, @asimba2, @mackai, @edclarke, @crowdtastic, @motoervan, @djsincla , @grantwilson, @Shea V (and I couldn’t @mention overlandupfitter, nickelnoff or felipe@travois ; maybe no longer active)

I think I’ve got everyone who’s posted about the topic; I’d LOVE to get your learnings. Specifically:
  • Where did you get your floor installed? What did it cost for the floor? For seats? Which seats did you get?
  • What would you do differently next time?
  • What flooring material did you use on top of the SmartFloor?
  • Any other learnings/pro-tips?
Here were some of my previous posts about my experience w/ the SmartFloor in my last van:
And here were my main learnings:
  • I tried to do four seats across; that didn’t work. Was too tight. So just going for 3 across this time. Four across would’ve blocked access to the back anyway, so although I thought I really wanted 4 across, it wasn’t a realistic thing to try to do.
  • I didn’t evenly space all my rails across last time (since I was trying to get 4 across). I wished I’d installed evenly spaced rails so I could put the M1 seat base on any of the pairs of rails. Having said that, though: I’m very cognizant that the seats only slide left/right a certain amount on the base, and I want to make sure I can get them flush to one side of the van to create as big a passage way on the other side. I’d love to hear from anyone who has evenly spaced rails; any tips?
  • I got the M1 narrow seats because I needed to seat up to 10 people total. The seats are indeed… narrow. Anyone use regular M1 seats, or other AMF Bruns seats, and still go 3 across? How well did it work? I’d love to see pics!!! Also would love to see any other non-AMF Bruns seats you used w/ a SmartFloor, and how well that worked. What I learned is that sometimes I need to seat all 9 family members, it’s rare for us to all be going somewhere. More often, it’s 2 adults + 4 kids. Having 3 seats facing backwards + 3 forwards around a table was our typical configuration.
  • Back when I was checking last time, the Travois floor was on a 6+ month long back-order, so I didn’t really explore it. Anyone know the current status? Any reason to pick one over the other? I absolutely loved my SmartFloor so don’t need to switch unless anyone’s got a really good reason Travois wins out. (FWIW I know they have some awesome “seat to bed” seating that I don’t think AMF Bruns has; but I *think* that seat only has 2 seatbelts, right? I wouldn’t be enough for our family.
Thanks in advance for all the learnings, and pls share as many pics as possible!!!

Jonathan Dobbs is the owner of Backroad Innovations. He’s a really good guy! I’ve also attached a few more pics of the rack.

Sorry I don’t have a build thread. Judging by your last build, a winch install will be a piece of cake.

I love this color a lot and it really stands out from other vans. There was someone on FB that wrapped his brilliant blue.

There are so many more safe seating options now than when I built my van back in 2017. I really like the quick release single seats like the Smart Seats, and particularly when they are in some sort of track where they can be moved or removed altogether.

I have drawn up all kinds of van layouts for myself and others in trying to maximize space for family builds. I am of the opinion that seats take up so much space in a van that they need to serve dual function. Dual function meaning the seat acting as both a seat and a bed. Scopema offers seats like mine from full-width down to just 30" wide. Not sure if they can be adapted to the smart floor or not, but I prefer these seats to the travois. Perhaps for your unique situation a couple of 30" scopema's doubling as a bed and a number of smart seats (singles) that you can remove/swivel would be the ticket.

Congrats on the new van!

I used 2tec2 flooring on my SmartFloor. I did the 2tec2 myself but I believe Daniel also does it - he installed my SmartFloor too! By the way the 2tec2 is absolutely bulletproof.

Picked the van up! I flew down to Los Angeles from San Francisco to get it. Bought it from Walters Mercedes Benz of Riverside California. The team was really great. Apparently they are the largest sprinter dealer in the nation, usually with 100 to 150 vans in stock, although it’s lower inventory right now due to the chip shortage. They had fully optioned vans that I couldn’t find anywhere else. If anyone else is looking for an extended van, they have A few more coming in with option packages like the LED exterior lighting package up. 3500 XD Duallys Like this one: https://www.waltersmercedesbenzspri...ed-cargo-van-4wd-cargo-van-w1y8ed6y7nt083131/

My sales guy was David, who did a really smart thing: he made a video of the van and sent it to me which was a really great way to help me see the van without being there. Here’s the link of that video: https://vidmails.com/v/fqapk6lT0q. But I want to give a special shout out and thank you to the finance manager, Toni. I flew down late on a Friday night and he drove back to the dealership to unlock the gate and let me pick the spinner up.

Drodio here’s a few quick ones of my smart floor installed by Esplori with the flatline step. I love this 2tech2 flooring so far. I’m still putting the van back togeather after having the floor installed. Currently it is in travel mode, seats will be shuffled around a bit in camping mode.

Everything else I’d do differently:

The AC was the big one — everything else feels like an optimization. Here’s what’s top of mind:

- I’d get a 50 gallon fuel tank. There were so many times I was exiting or entering California where gas was $1 or more cheaper per gallon on the other side of the state line, and I wished I could fill up on the cheaper fuel. I’d love to know of any recommendations anyone has for a good high quality tank - the bigger, the better. (Also I have no idea if a larger tank messes w/ the onboard computer; LMK if anyone has any experience w/ that)

- I insulated the van with Havelock wool. It seemed to work well. But: I’d find wisps of wool here & there on a regular basis. That’s probably because I didn’t completely close off some of the insulated areas; if you did, you likely wouldn’t have this problem. I’ll probably just do Thinsulate this time around. No huge opinions here so I’d love to hear from those who do have opinions. @asimba2 you recommended this link https://ourkaravan.com/insulation/ in a post, which has some intriguing ideas (like ceramic spray insulation.)

- I ordered a pricey DragonFly Tarp,
which I loved. It’s got a huge surface area and is very configurable based on where the sun is. But it takes maybe 10 minutes to set up, and there were many times that I longed for the simplicity and ease of an electric awning, which I would’ve put out more often. I’m conflicted on this one; I’ll probably try the awning approach for this van. LMK if anyone’s got a favorite brand.

- I covered the SmartFloor with Lonseal commercial grade flooring, which I had hoped would be bulletproof. It was OK, but I had to take much more care of it than I expected to. Basically, if I wasn’t careful, I could scratch the floor by pulling a heavy object over it. That was unexpected. I’m definitely on the lookout for some other flooring material that’s more bulletproof. Anyone have suggestions?

- I only installed one MaxxFan. With this build, I’m going to go for both an input and output air source, because the MaxxFan would complain if I didn’t keep the windows cracked. Adding an AC unit would solve this issue; I’m thinking maybe the Dometic above the table sitting area + a MaxxFan in the back.

- I didn’t get the electronic parking brake. It’s such a small thing but it was really a pain to have to hunt for the manual parking brake with all the other stuff I had in the center console. This new van has the electronic brake.

- I used VHB tape to install my solar panels — and then one flew off in the high wind conditions of I-10 between CA & AZ. After that I riveted them down, and I’ll definitely do that again next time!

- I’ll probably get the same Aluminess roof rack again, since I love having the low profile front LED light bar, but I’d love to know if anyone’s got a good cheaper alternative to achieve the same effect. I’d thought that maybe the solid aluminum component roof rack would keep the van’s roof cooler, but I don’t think it really mattered.

- I wish I’d installed rear stereo speakers before I did the buildout. The kids were always asking for music.

- @TransitVansit I didn’t go with the full interior AdvWagon kit; just got the Moab bed & mule bags from them. I built out my own interior using a cloth hook & loop Velcro fabric, which I’d hoped would let me attach things to the walls. It worked out OK but the material wasn’t as durable as I’d expected it to be. If I were to try that again, I’d have the harder “hook” side be the walls vs the softer “loop” side. But I don’t know anyone that sells the “hook” side as fabric rolls. LMK if anyone does!

Here are a few pics of the DragonFly Tarp from my last build:

View attachment 212645 View attachment 212646
dragonfly tarps look stupid expensive. I hammock camp. I’m putting a couple stainless steel eye bolts on my roof rails. go to a tarp website or one for hammocks. I used a regular heavy duty tarp in a couple sizes… 10x12, 10x14, etc. I picked up sections of Easton Aluminum poles.

then you can use line of your choice to go from the tent pole to a stake in the ground. I use 3 of the .742 poles together so that I have plenty of height. tarp can also be used as a shade cover for when I’m hammock camping in warm weather.

Ok first mod! Super simple but very effective. I run the USB cable through a hole in the center tray down through one of the open switch slots and then use a phone holder that hooks into the cupholder for my phone.

Nice solution! I got the CarLinkIt 3.0 wireless Carplay adapter and it works pretty well. Then I just keep the top bin closed and plug my phone in the lower USB ports for power when I need it.
