Arrow Looking to buy sprinter van but need your help !

Hi,

I'm new here to the forum and this is my first post. I'm looking at purchasing a sprinter van for commuting back and forth to work and occasional overnights and road trips. I'm looking on craigslist for used vans in the San Diego area. I've been looking around the forum and getting a lot of helpful information and questions to ask sellers. I found this van http://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/cto/5864356835.html , the add says it needs a new Head Gasket. Any idea as to how much this might be to replace ?

I like the phrase in the ad: "Con: needs head gasket. Motor runs and sounds great" - yeah right.

So, the SELLER says it needs a head gasket. How did it get that way? What else is going on? 236k miles - might be a lot.

$6750? not a chance. $2k maybe. I'd walk away, unless I was into a project.

First, I am not in anyway knowledgeable in repairs of any sort.
My frist worry would be runs great but needs head gasket. Small leak? Thinks leaking from head or just gasket? Whom diagonsed that it needs head gasket?
As many others here have pointed out before, is there any stored codes? Are theire anyone in area or shop in your area with professional scan/diagnosis problems?
Half done remodels? Safe? Leaks? Mounting points sealed?
I'd take a high pressure wash and be sure spray great deal underneath van and around all windows.
IMHO: High miles for that price! Our 03 Passenger 140" WB SHR model has less than 54K miles have been told only worth $5K.
"Good Luck!"

very seldom is the head gasket the only thing bad in situations like this.
would guess that overheating may have been involved in that gasket failing (since it''s pretty rare for them to just up and fail otherwise)
in that case, the head itself could also be a problem (warped, cracked etc)
unless you feel confident about doing the job yourself - or have someone you trust willing to help, if not just do it for you,
i would stay away - or bargain harder with the seller - as there's simply too many ?'s on something like this, to pay more than salvage value.
IF the body was cherry tho, like NO rust and everything else was looking good?
then taking a chance MIGHT be in order, assuming your're prepared for the wor$t...
just 2 more cents.

I don't know of any Sprinter that runs that is only worth 5k. Don't trust whoever told you that.

casylents.
Hitting a Sprinter with a high pressure washer will reduce its value to about $5K. about six weeks ago someone in England rote of a Sprinter with a High pressure washer. There should be an icon under the bonnet sorry hood showing a hose with a led slash across it. Eric.

WOW! A Sprinter with only 236k miles for only $6750 in California?! That sounds like a bargain too good to be true, so have a pre-purchase inspection done by a shop. They are around $200, but worth it if you have doubts. I recently sold my 280k van for $12.5k, which was very reasonable for California. If you want a low mileage van, there is a 2005 in the SF Bay Area with only 20k miles for $25k.
