Default EGR cleaning

Hello.
My van is acting craizy in the low RPM's, and I know it is a EGR. ( been there done that 3 times ) But before( on the warranty ) I servicet at the dealer, so, no more warranty even for the EGR so I planning to remove it and clean it.
Question: do I have to unplug the battery and connector from EGR or just the EGR connector? Thank you!!!
Who done this? Any tips appreciated!!!

Unplug the egr connector / disconnect the 2 hoses /remove the 4-5 bolts and pull it out

The other issue after a certain point the EGR cooler may need cleaning as well.

The EGR cooler is a one year old. (
dealer replaced under warranty )

After a certain point the coupling thingies ( they look like square extruded electric motor commuter brushes ) may fracture. Then the spring which returns the prop to start position does not return the stepper motor to its proper indent... stepper motors have feedback and thus detect position. If your curious what the inside of your EGR looks like I am attaching pictures. from what I can tell, it would be impossible to reassemble an EGR if you take these two halves apart and more importantly I believe tapping or using a hammer can drop 9ne of the 4 thingies out of position so i shall never again tap one out like others suggest doing in this post. I believe I could machine a new means of coupling the drive with the propeller ( thing looks like a boat prop... others are calling it a tulip or butterfly interchangeably ). By the way I believe my EGR failed because I was using the filter status indicator instead of checking my airfilter... my indicator ceased up and stuff was growing in my K and N filter... will post new thread on repairing the indicator but let me say most of you do not have it. Instead you have a plug in your air filter housing... my dads sprinter is the only one I ever saw with it and I have worked on 30 or so sprinters to date.. you may find soot or some type of oil film on your mass airflow sensor as I did and clean it with the appropriate products.

Every K&N or oiled air filter I have come across deposits smootch (Technical term for oil and dust crap) on the MAF sensor. The oil is a bad idea, and the dirt downstream of the filter has convinced me they are a bad idea. OEM fiber filters for me.

What bothers me is the color... k and n oil is red... I also found particles to large to get past the filter and believe the o ring where the mass air flow seals to the upper air filter housing let's stuff seep by as debris excessively accumulated on the ring in only certain areas

My antique motorcycles and some of my tractors actually use oil to filter air and have no fiber filters.

Those antique motorcycles and tractors donít have MAF sensors. And ingesting a bit of oil is normal, for both.
It does look like you found your problem, if not the cause.
Anyway......I will amend my statement........In my experience, oiled fiber filters such as K&N provide no discernible benefit, and cause increased wear, along with MAF problems.
They are gravel stoppers, and as such, better than an open carb throat.

Need help, I have a 2005 sprinter and I was having it go into limp mode so I took out the egr today to clean it. Well to start with I took off the top part and realized that was not correct and put it back on and then took out the egr and cleaned it. I think I didn't put the top back on correctly because the butterfly doesn't spring back. I put it back in and started the van and it ran really bad, worse than before I did anything. Did I screw it up? And can I fix it?
