Actually my wheel/tire assemblies were balanced with the extended metal valve stem by a MB dealer.

Hummm.... what to do? I thought about putting a piece of hose over the stem to protect it but nothing was at hand. More thinking. What if we just 'gently' bent it back a little bit so there was clearance between the stem and the wheel cover? That's what I did just eased it away from the cover and gave it some breathing room. I did it with trepidation.... maybe the same feeling you would have defusing an IED. You really don't want that sucker to break while you have your paws on it.

Success. Everything is now good.

Before anyone starts!!! No, I've not had problems with the bling disks rotating on the rims. I do check them as part of the 'pre-flight' every time it is driven. And, I check them during the drives when ever we stop.
Judging by your choice of words I assume you are prior or retired Army. Way to go!
