The service advisor didn't know what I was talking about, but said that he was confident his sprinter specialists could do it. They could, and did. He called later in the day and let me know the van was ready for pickup.

The invoice lists the item charge as "Service Code J-51".
Thank you Sir!

The service advisor told me that same thing. I told him I didn't care, since it was just as inaccurate as the fuel gauge.

I got tired of the van telling me I had less than 75 miles of range left and was in "reserve fuel" status, just to get to the gas station and put 10 gallons into my 24.5 gallon tank.

I'll put a few hundred miles on the van this weekend, so I'm interested to see how the J-51 has changed things.

I have the J51 option from factory and the display does provide estimated range based on remaining fuel. However, it is a very rough estimate, I'd say plus or minus >100 miles. It's the way it calculates that is bad, basing it on very recent (like last minute of usage). I have a BMW with a 3.0 liter diesel and it provides range that is good to within a few miles, unintentionally tested once when it's range got to 0 miles and a 1/4 mile later rolled into a fuel station with it sputtering, and with a full tank it's range of roughly 750 miles will be accurate at fill up to within about 20 miles. My sprinter always says 560 miles at fill up and I get about 400 before nearly empty.

Not sure how much more accurate the J51 option is than without it since it is so inaccurate even with this option.

Without it, I fill up at it says 560 miles. After 250 miles the low fuel light comes on. When I fill up at 300 miles I put between 18-19 gallons in and it is reading like 10 miles to empty. I know I can safely run it another 80 miles and still have a gallon plus in the tank (I dont because burning up fuel pumps sucks).

Sounds like either way its about as accurate as licking your finger to measure wind speed.

Based on what you guys are saying, J51 sounds like the way to go.

My Van is in getting its airbag replaced and J51 coded today. Maybe it will give me some kind of idea how much fuel the Espar is sucking down. Also getting my drivers door lock hooked back up. It hasnt worked since day 1. Will be nice to have a backup to a dead key to get into the van!!!!

This van looks great on 33's. Stock gears? Goes OK? How's your fuel mileage?

Thanks. I notice no difference in "go" from the stock tire size. No idea on mileage, but it seems fine. Love this van more all the time. AC goes on next week.

I know this has become a major thread hi-jack, and I apologize for that. Having said that, I'm here to add to the hijacking. But only because I want to put closure on the J51 thing in case other folks find this in a search down the road!

I've driven a few thousand miles since having the J51 program applied to my van. It's working fantastic. The fuel gauge is very accurate now. The dash does still give me a range read-out, which is also much more accurate now. I refueled yesterday. The range displayed said I had 90 miles left. The van took 20 gallons. I got an average of 19.3mpg on that tank (true mpg, not the computer read-out).

That's close enough for me to consider the issue resolved.
I hope that sharing my struggle helps someone else avoid similar strife in the future. And apologies again for hijacking this thread about a super cool van lift.

I did 3000 miles over 2 weeks after having it coded and my experience echo Tiny's.
