I am on the Blue Ridge Pwy. and a NEW idiot light just came on and I left my owners Manual at home (dumb)..The light is in the very left corner at the bottom and it looks like a Gas Pump with a Rail road track under it?? It is probably fuel related but ???? The Van is running great at the moment BUT I fear the Unknown..So PLEASE someone advise me ASAP..Very Kind Regards,,02Sprinter

02 Sprinter,
Lower left side in a bit? It is probably your water in fuel light. A gas pump icon with a clear container showing a liquid level on the right side. Sikwan probably has a full color HD picture of it. Hope this does some good. AP/vic

You should be able to drain the water off by using a short hose off the fuel filter drain directed into a quart(?) sized catch container using about 5 second bursts. I found a procedure for draining the OM647 Water from the filter, but the OM647 has an electric low pressure fuel pump in the tank. Your 2002 is an OM612 with a mechanical low pressure fuel pump mounted on the engine. My searches didn't come up with the procedure for the OM612. I didn't find it in the Owner's Manual. It was referenced in the Service Manual, but I didn't find it.

The Fuel Filter Change PDF is here:
http://piercehome.us/Sprinter/FuelFilter.pdf
Thanks to HKPierce.

Some additional water in fuel info.

From the owner's manual

Water in Fuel Indicator Lamp
When the key is turned to position 2 in the ignition
lock, the fuel filter indicator lamp in the
instrument cluster lights up for about 7 seconds. It
must go out when the engine is running.
If water in fuel indicator lamp does not go out or
comes on with the engine running, drain the water
from the fuel filter as soon as possible.
NOTE: Should the water in fuel indicator lamp
still not go out after the fuel filter has been drained, the
cause should be examined by an authorized Sprinter
Dealer.
If the indicator lamp does not light up for about
7 seconds with the key in the ignition lock in position 2,
there is a malfunction in the water separator system.
Have the cause rectified by an authorized Sprinter.

From a Service Manual PDF

STANDARD PROCEDURES - DRAINING WATER
FROM FUEL FILTER

Refer to Fuel Filter/Water Separator removal/installation
for procedures (Refer to 14 - FUEL SYSTEM/
FUEL DELIVERY/FUEL FILTER / WATER
SEPARATOR - REMOVAL).
***I looked in section 14, but I found nothing on the water drain procedure. Sorry****
WATER IN FUEL SENSOR DESCRIPTION
The water in fuel sensor is located in the bottom of
the fuel filter housing. This sensor detects the presence
of water in the fuel. If water is present in the
fuel a signal is sent to the ECM and the ECM signals
the instrument cluster, over the CAN bus, to illuminate
the water in fuel warning.
OPERATION
The non-dielectric properties of the water allow the
sensors probes to close the electronic circuit when
water is present in the system. When diesel fuel is
present in the system, itís dielectric (does not conduct
electricity well) properties do not allow any electrical
contact between the probes. A 12V power signal is
always present in order to illuminate the indicator on
the instrument cluster. For removal and installation
procedure refer to (Refer to 14 - FUEL SYSTEM/
FUEL DELIVERY/FUEL FILTER - REMOVAL).

The owner's manual I found on-line didn't give the water drain procedure. Hope this does some good. AP/vic

Thumbs up Re: Please ---Need help on Idiot light ??

Update!!!! After a quick call, and response, to Andy (THE Great Dr.A) I am back on the road...However... That Idiot light is a Low Fuel pressure warning light caused by a PARTIALLY clogged fuel filter. EVEN Dr.A had to reference it to determine juat what this light was??? I had a terrible time locating the correct fuel filter. I had to drive 80miles to get one..So my BEST advise to all is carry a SPARE if you are on the road..Also look for this light as I NEVER saw it before AND it is not even mentioned in my owners manual!!! Thank you AGAIN Dr.A,you are a BLESSING..Kind Regards,02Sprinter

Lightbulb Re: Please ---Need help on Idiot light ??

I think it is mentioned in the manual, they don't group all the lights and their meanings in the same section though. If that in fact was your problem, I'm surprised you did not experience a lack of power? Either way, glad you're on the road again

When I turned the key on my 2004 to check before posting the WIF info I never saw an icon light with a pump and a symbol under it. I double checked a minute ago and I don't have one. Does anyone know if that light exists on the 2004 - 2006 T1N's? Should it be coming on during my pre-start light test sequence?

Sorry for any confusion, but nobody had responded to the post at that point so I gave it my best shot. AP/vic

Bump.

Does anyone know if I should be seeing the additional left side low fuel pressure icon light during my 2004 idiot light verification start sequence? It's in my manual, but it doesn't light up in pre-start. You would think it would light up before starting if it is there.

Doktor A......Carl????? Thanks. AP/vic
