Default Need advice in buying an ambo

Hi all long time no see. Sold my 413cdi a few years back and now looking buy an ambo. My sister wants to travel AUS for a photography project so I need to get an ex ambo with all the cabinets inside to fit out as a camper.

Does anyone have one for sale?

Best place to buy?

What not to touch?

Currently looking at a few V6 units in QLd, seem to be going cheap. Any issues with these?

How do the transmissions fair in units over 200,000km.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kuba8

I bought a 2008 318 ex ambo (ex country, Mader built) @ Manheim auctions earlier this year with 6 months reg for $15,000 (reserve was $16000) complete with 240V inverter & battery charger. Car yards, such as Melbourne Cheapest Vans would sell it for $20000+ without reg.

Refer http://www.manheim.com.au/passenger-...=VIC&Keywords=

Don't touch a 315 Sprinter, as it has engine bearing problems.

The older T1N 316 Sprinter is the more reliable with less problems than the current model.

If buying at Manheim, pick one with current rego, as you only need to get a RWC & go to Vicroads & pay the stamp duty & transfer fee. Pre inspection is a must, as many goodies on some are taken before the auction.

Feel free to ask more quuestions.

Cheers Sockeye

Kuba8.
Welcome back. I have a 316 which has been partly converted to a camper, the owner pulled out and returned to Germany. It needs work on the rust under the windscreen and the air con needs work. may suit your sister. Eric

Thanks Eric we kind of need the vehicle up and running ASAP and finance guy said our low doc terms are no more than 5 years old. So don't think its possible. Kinda sucks because I know that the only issue would be rust with the van you have.

Thanks for the heads up on the 315 bearing issues sockeye. I will be going the V6 as well. I know a guy who has one and has 700,000km on the factory engine.

How many km did your sprinter have on the clock for $15000. Currently I am going through a dealer who has access to ex fleet ambos and said there are a heap of them in a yard in qld.

Said there are over 50 waiting to be released and he will be up in Brisbane on Monday submitting an offer. He said they most likely will be released slowly as to not flood the market. Currently looking at this one if the dealer comes up with nothing.

http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/de...2340041/?Cr=27

A little worried about the transmission though as the dealer said he is going to look at one that has 270,000km and has all the books but had the tranny done 100,000km ago.

Would 21k be a fair price for km as i have seen a few 350,000km 318 going for around 16k from dealers?

What do you guys think would be a fair offer for the 270,000km unit if the dealer gives me the green light?

I am kind of limited to dealers due to finance arrangements.

Would you be interested in a 2002 316 that's as you describe except for no compression in cylinder 3? I only found that last part out today but I won't go into it since you say you want one asap and not one cheap but you know, just in case.

By the looks of things 15k is about right at auction for higher km units but a dealer is selling one for 13k.

So they must be picking them up dirt cheap.

The one in the link needs a lot of work to remove all that ambulance gear, unless you are going to leave it in that is?
Its in QLD so it will take more effort to get it registered in Vic, the drivers seat in the pic is torn so will need replacing for a Vic RWC.

Interesting looks good, possible explanation of the price, the dealer may have picked up a few K by selling the suspension front seats. The seats fitted are from another vehicle so the SRS light will be on, this is easily fixed but I would rather pay an extra K for one with the proper seats in it. Eric.
