Thanks for the offer Nathan, very kind of you. I appreciate the offer.
My skills are in flooring, carpet, vinyl etc. I do know a shower screen/glazier guy who can help with your shower enclosure.
If you have time this weekend lets catch up. Private message me for details.

You can drive it OK without the alternator so long as the battery volts does not drop below about 11.5V as the computers will get confused and throw a lot of codes, particularly when starting. As the alternator is not contributing at the moment and you have been driving the van for short distances now, so long as you charge it up over night you should be fine. Disconnect a battery terminal before removing alternator.
Ensure to insulate the alternator leads after removal.

You can run a car engine without an alternator but on a Mercedes Sprinter you may be asking
for trouble due to the computer complexity and if it goes into Limp Home Mode it will cost a trip
to the dealer to unlock it, myself i just wouldn't do that, it needs to be looked at by someone
who knows what there doing.

416.
You must not start the motor without the alternator. You will have no cooling no steering and as other have said you will set a code. There are instructions on here for the alternator removal.it is very similar to the belt change procedure. your brushes should not be worn out at that K's, they are probably just stuck in the holder, a probe hooked under the brush lead can pull the brush back a little from the slip ring and free it up. A spray of WD40 on the brush holder will allow it to move down against the slip ring and if your lucky you may get another 100kKs out of it. Eric.

Silly me!
I completely forgot about the drive belt! No you should not run the vehicle without an alternator, going or not going. Eric is right about the brushes possibly sticking. A light tap on the alternator might free them up but the usual cause of sticking is worn brushes.

Cheers

Im getting some conflicting advice and misinformation from a few guys here saying;

- I can not or should not drive my van with out the alternator.
- If I do so my steering and cooling systems will not work.
- My van may go into LHM (Limp Home Mode).

This may be true for some models of Sprinter but it does not seem to be the case with mine.

I have had no alternator operation (it is still attached) for the last 10 days and I have been driving my van with the steering and cooling systems working as per normal and I have not gone into LHM during this time.

Each night I put my battery on charge and when I do drive somewhere it has only been short distances. If my battery was to be drained whilst driving I have the Jump starter battery pack that I can connect to get me home again.

I am not criticising the advice I am receiving here, I appreciate all your help.

When I get to work tomorrow I may put it up on the hoist and try to remove it then.

416CDI
If you remove the alternator then the drive belt which runs the fan, steering pump, aircon, etc will not have the pulley to run over and so will not be under tension and therefore will not operate the said devices.
