On several occasions, I have shipped vintage VW's and vintage Porsches back to their fatherland and left them there for a few years before selling them or shipping them back to the US. When I prepared the paperwork, I made sure that it was clearly stated the origin of the vehicles was Germany. In this way, I was exempt from duties. Never prepaid duties. Nor, was I asked to pay duties.
