Default Beware of negligent (stupid) people!

Hi all! This morning my wife and I witnessed one of the most egregious acts by a fellow camper that we've witnessed to date in all of our RV travels. What I'll share may not be news to some but I share this as a cautionary tale be be mindful as you're getting fresh water for your RV. This morning as we were leaving Interlochen State Park in northern Michigan we stopped by the dump station to dump our black tank and take on fresh water. When we pulled up the idiot before us actually had the fresh water hose that hangs on the pole fully inserted into his stinky slinky to clean it out. It would be bad enough if he was using the fresh water hose for cleaning but to have it fully inserted into his stinky slinky was beyond stupid. Mind you the water was clearly marked as drinking water and not ten feet away was the water hose for cleaning, which was also clearly marked. Suffice to say he heard more than a few "choice words" from me about his stupidity. So I now have an added procedure to disinfect the end of any fresh water hose I attached either to my hose or directly to my water inlet at the coach service center. I just thought I'd share this with you all in the event there's more than one stupid person that uses campground water facilities. Nah, what are the chances there's another person out there that stupid. Okay, I'm not taking that bet!

Not surprised - I try to never get fresh water near the dumping station - always try to find it someplace else in the campground (even if I have to use my 5 gallon water can). I agree people just aren't too bright at times. At a super busy dump station in Yellowstone one rig had the whole family standing in the puddle. Dad, Mom, the kids, and the dog!

We have never used our fresh water tanks for drinking water and often fill them with non-potable water when no other option exists. We use the water for washing only.

Washing what? Hands? Dishes?
What about showers? Do you realize that showers put out a mist that can be inhaled or swallowed? Bacteria hitches rides on mists (think of coughs, sneezes, etc.)

Stupid seems to be the topic of the week....

On Monday we were waiting in line at the Mt Lehman rest stop near Abbotsford BC to dump our tanks. The guy two ahead of us finished dumping, then pulled ahead the 50 feet to the potable water tap and proceeded to flush out his dump hose on the grass.

Sounds like he must be related to the guy you witnessed.

I just don't understand people sometimes.

Yeah I was reading up on Legionella. That stuff is a little scary. We never drink from our water system either, but now I'm thinking a little chlorine a little more often may not be a bad idea.

It'll grow in the dormant water lines of hotel wings that have been shut down for the season. Those lines need to be sanitized before the hotel wing can be safely reopened. The freakiest place it grows (to me at least) is the windshield washer fluid rez in the engine compartment. A problem probably made worse by the "summer" washer fluid. Mist the windshield - hmmm I think I'll hold my breath.

All things considered such as playing with mercury as kids, using gasoline for cleaning, and a world full of chemicals and contaminants, we are lucky to be alive and in top health.

Legionnaires' disease - yes very scary.

The original outbreak was caused by the bacteria growing in the cooling towers that were on the roof of the hotel. The mist from these cooling towers made its way into the hotel (possibly by open windows or fresh air intakes) and made the American Legion attendees sick.

Yeah all that fun stuff - like sawing asbestos/cement board to make fire proof cabinets.

I have seen people attach a hose to those hoses and connect to their Black flush as well. Hope the check valve is good! Make sure you always look for signs at dump stations as to water quality. Most dump stations I've encountered with water spigots are Non-Potable water. The State Parks I've been to have a separate area, away from the Dump Station, designated to use for drinking water and is the central location for campers to fill their tanks from. But you are right if the Dump Station has the only Potable drinking water spigot then dipping it in Bleach before you draw water out of it is critical. I always try to dump quickly and don't worry about flushing my back tank until I get to a full hookup campground. Recently, I was at an Omaha Casino, with Water and Electric hookup, for 2 nights and when I pulled up to the dump station I was third in line after a 5th wheel. It was nearing 100 degrees and no shade, that morning and the 5th wheel took his sweet time dumping his various tanks, rinsing, rolling up his water hoses, on and on for nearly 45 minutes. I had to shut off the engine and run the generator while we watched the "Lack of Courtesy" show. I really felt sorry for the guy waiting behind him with his portable sewer tank just standing in the hot sun!

Full hookup sites are not guaranteed to have a clean water spigot either, I've seen campers rinsing their stinky slinky parts and dripping stinky stuff all over those as well. I carry Lysol so I can spray the spigot at my campsite as well when I see a lot of water splashed all over the hookup area.
