The filter I have used is for 92’ 300e 2.5 TD fuel filter normally installed before fuel pump. It has just a fine mesh to protect fuel pump. It won’t effect vacuum but since it is clear plastic it will show if antifreeze is in vacuum system.
I have picture but I can’t figure out how to post it.

Thought I would share my story regarding the now infamous 2.1 water pump woes. I got a service engine soon light a few weeks ago, didn't have time to get it checked out until a few days ago. Autozone read it for me, P261F. Says might be water pump related, I think no problem, I am at 95,000 miles still under the 5 year 100,000. I am out of town visiting family (dealer is in Omaha, NE, I live in Tampa, FL). I make an appointment and take it to the dealer, they tell me it will be $160 to do a diagnostic. I am 1500 miles from home so not in a position to argue, I say go ahead. They come back to me 20 minutes later and tell me the water pump is in deed in need of replacement, there is coolant in the vacuum lines and clear indication of the issue we are all discussing here.

He then proceeds to tell me the cost of said repair:

Diagnostic - $160
Water Pump Replacement (parts and labor) - $829.12
Replace water pump change over valve - $183.65
Replace Vacuum Canister coolant Intrusion - $126.29
Total with tax - $1377.05

I tell him, no problem its covered under the 5 year, 100K warranty, right?

He tells me not so fast, the warranty ended May 27th 2019, the purchase date was May 27th 2014, so 2 months too late, he double checked it with MB before he came out to speak to me.

I tell him come on man, this has to be a joke, he said nope. I decided to call the MB warranty care line myself and gave the whole story to them and they gave me the big FU, can't help you too bad routine. I got the dealer to knock off 10% but man what a hard and $$ lesson to learn.

So let this be a warning for all those 2014 owners out there, check your purchase date and go get your water pump checked before it's too late.

I don't blame the dealership as they really can't control the situation and I do think the service manager felt bad for me. I blame MB's warranty review department for not acknowledging the obviously known issue with the water pumps on these vans, and my own naivety for not even thinking about the date in the year expiration. All I can say is I am feeling like an idiot for not staying on top of this and getting it addressed sooner. I had a low coolant light alert 6 months ago and had to add about 1 cup of coolant to bring it back to normal, nothing was leaking and no other issues so I ignored it, lesson learned.

Yes. As I mentioned above, I had been ignoring a P261F code since the van was almost new. This was the only hint of a problem, it was easy to clear, and it ONLY ever happened after the van was parked for a month or so. Didn't seem worth pursuing, until I read Dennis's posting. It took the last month of my warranty to get me off my behind. Very glad I did.

Well ...I probably missed the warranty on this one, too, as mine is also a 2014. Is there a particular mileage range where these pumps start to become problematic, or is there simply no rhyme or reason? My 2014 is getting ready to turn 91k, and it's going to NC in a little more than a month, so I'd rather not have any surprises. :)

Cant really tell with the water pump mine lasted over 300k and still didnt fail i just decided to replace it at that point but I got a bad aftermarket pump online that would hold vacuum so after I replaced it with the oem from the dealer all is good now i wouldn’t worry to much about it you can check make sure you dont see any leak around the pump and stuff and enjoy your trip
