I'm starting to lean toward just carrying a shotgun... mounted in the back window... with elk antlers on the cab roof...

Seriously - a shotgun is, supposedly, unregulated. Not sure about Canada.

My recommendation. Please never ever store with chambered round. "Cruiser ready" is unchambered.

No firearms of any kind allowed across the border into Canada without special permits.

A less lethal alternative.

We concluded that bear spray is the way to go for us.

Reminds me of a sort of funny story. Maybe 10 years ago we were hiking in the Lost Creek Wilderness area of Colorado. When we pulled into the parking lot there were a couple of guys sitting on the tailgate of their truck and one was in obvious discomfort. We parked, loaded our packs and started walking to the trailhead and walked by them. "Hey, you're not looking so good!" I says to one. The other says, "Yeah, last night my buddy sprayed his nuts with bear spray." I say, "What!" He say, "Yeah, he was messing around with the can and..." My sphincter was completely tight and my wife was having visions of her own as we beat feet out of there. There was a picture I've never been able to erase. Thanks Bob for causing me to dig it up again!

An alternative to Bear spray is Wasp spray. Shoots pretty far and might be cheaper

Although, I have never been sprayed with wasp spray. Having sprayed dozens of inmates, I can tell you from first hand experience that pepper spray is far more instantly incapacitating. Any doubts, feel free to experiment.

I avoid places that don't want me to visit.
I will, however take advantage of following their rules.
US citizens can get a Canadian firearm license - even restricted. Requires a trip to Canada tho.
However it is a MAJOR hassle to transport a pistol across Canada.
A shotgun which will be used for hunting in Alaska (NOT for personal defense) is the best way to go.
Be sure to have all your paperwork - read the rules carefully. A license is not required but makes you look like a good guy or gal.
I leave the (tho technically legal in Canada) short barrel w/laser at home and take the hunting length bead sight barrel.
Any ammo must match the intended purpose, be stored separately, yada yada.
And no don't try to hide something - not worth it.

Wasp spray may expose user to legal grief.
