We just experienced the overheating issue and the Microwave is now out of commission. Fortunately we're still within our warranty and LTV quickly offered to ship a new Microwave. No more baked potatoes on convection mode for us.

I wonder if the microwave failed because it overheated in a closed space or if the design simply can't handle long periods of high level heating or if there is simply a weak point somewhere else in the microwaves design?

Curious....what temperature and time duration you were using in 'convection' mode? We were planning on baked potatoes soon, but.......maybe not. If its gonna fail, perhaps now is the time during warranty period.

The only time we use our convection oven is for baking a frozen pizza. As I see it (wife too), our bread-box sized microwave is more suitable for thawing and heating food etc. I don't think it's realistic to expect much more. Others may not agree. Our Airstream has a larger Sharp convection/microwave and it is a higher quality than the Unity micro. Going on 11 years now and still working perfect. Pizza's turn out great and the heat from the micro is removed by the overhead exhaust fan vented to the outside! We were disappointed the Unity didn't have an overhead exhaust above the stove top. However, the Fantastic Fans do a good job evacuating heat and odors created when cooking. J&B

I don't know exactly, but I'm sure that thing was in convection mode for almost 1 hour. That worked, but then the better half (and I do mean BETTER) used the microwave for several minutes too. That's when things started to smell rather electrical. I made a crack to her about killing the microwave and the silly thing suddenly made a weird sound and quit for good. No lights or anything now. We did have the overhead fan on the whole time.

It took quite a while for that area of the cabinet to cool down again. I just don't think there is enough air flow inside the cabinet for it to run in convection mode for any long period of time.

When the "better half" then used the microwave did she do so in convection mode or just regular microwaving?

We have the same problem. It is even worse when you want to cook a commercial pie, usually cooked frozen initially. After half an hour, the microwave safety turn it off for at least 20 minutes.

It was in microwave mode at that point.
