Default Fix it or not???

My 2006 sprinter blew the engine. Bad piston or rings. Iím in Vegas and the average price is about 11k for a reman engine and install. Iíve converted it into a camper and have about 20k in the conversion.

What does everyone think? Should I replace the engine or just buy a brand new something and switch all the interior over to a new one?

Iím concerned that itís becoming a money pit and something else is just around the corner. 193k miles

Opinions please?

Good used takeouts are also an option, especially with such a high investment in a conversion. $4000-$6000 range? If I were in your shoes (but still carrying my wallet) that's the route I'd go. I know Dennis (lindenengineering on here) sometimes keeps them around for exactly your scenario. Worth considering IMHO.

Edit: if "not" is chosen there's very little chance you'll recover any appreciable value from your old van...

Just so long as the body and subframe are in decent shape, fix it. Swapping out your build to another van will be much more expensive once you consider the time to swap added to the cost of the replacement van.

Good luck

It depends.
Did you regularly maintain and monitor your old engine?
If not, expect something similar could recur from bad injectors or wrong oil use

AH hah!!
The rules of THUMBbellina again.
If the van is worth more than 70% of a new/factory rebuilt engine then its worth considering.

As with any major unit , if rebuilding an engine & it amounts to LESS than 70% of buying a replacement engine, then consider it a good proposition.

If a good used take out is 70% of the van's value then again consider it.

This has been asked before............does not get easier. As many have chosen not to repair rebuild vans 4-6 years newer with half the miles.

193k. body rust ??????????

193k Transmission and rear end ??????? Potentially another $7-8k
