Even so, I have seen no details of the hub. Does it have any kind of gear changes in it? Or does the electric motor just pick up the slack.

No gears. It's very innovative. BionX is a 500w brushless motor based in Canada. Visit the Electric Bike site, go to news, toggle to the 2 level, and learn all you want to know about the BionX drive system that Elby uses.
