Forest Roads/Dirt Roads/Off Road North East USA

Can anyone recommend some good places for a ramble off the pavement in Vermont, Pennsylvania, New York, or any other NE spots? Are you allowed to drive on National Forest Roads anywhere nice? Do you know of any? im not looking to get into anything too gnarly, just a solid ride out to a lake or river or something cool. or even a loop or turnaround, with no real destination. would consider Canada/Quebec as well, or Maine if someone has a spot or a list or link or anything for the NE...Thanks!

All the National Forests should have a MVUM (Motor Vehicle Use Map) that shows you where you can legally drive without getting in trouble.
