I Possibly have isolated my whistling noise from front of engine. alternator pulley is suspect.
it does free wheel one direction and lockup the other, it's 200,000 miles old.
Spayed some lube on pulley and it seems to change pitch and goes away for a time.
But it was intermitant before spraying lube on pulleys.

Question,
What is typical life span of alternator?

I have a new alt. with pulley in my parts supply,
and also a new alt clutch with removal tool.

Should i just put new alternator on complete with pulley?

Or try replace old pulley with new pulley on existing alternator that is still in sprinter,
not sure if theres even enough room.

Thanks

I would say 200k miles is a good run for an alternator. Eventually the brushes wear and the output goes intermittent.

I would pull the old alt off and swap the new one. If the old one just needs new brushes, you can easily swap the regulator/brush assy on the bench.

I suspect it will need a new bearing though.
