Suitable oil.

Oils ain't oils or is that Castrol?
I've always used Mobil1 0W40 which costs me about $140 for 10 litres delivered but I notice that Repco has synthetic 0W40 for less than $100 for 10 litres, is this suitable for my OM611 diesel 313? They (Repco) couldn't tell me. TIA.

you need something with 'mb approval' as per the numbers below

Engine OM611DE LA
with oil filter
611.981 8,5 l motor oil

228.3
228.5 / 228.51
229.3 / 229.31
229.5 / 229.51

if it has mb approval it is likely to be written on the bottle

Penrite HPR5 is officially 229.5 approved and is about half the price of Mobil 1, even less when on sale. Supercheap has it.

Dont go 229.51, stick with 229.5 because you dont need crappy anemic oil when you have no DPF.

I use Penrite because its MB approved and available everywhere. Very easy to buy a 5 litre container when needed for top ups, and is often on sale at Repco, Autobarn & Supercheap.
Check the Penrite website for the recommended oil for your sprinter model.

Yep its these kind of deals when I stock up on HPR5. It usually this price a couple of times a year for at leaast the past 5 years (has been as low as $29/5l). Makes Mobil1 prices look like a joke.

Winchcombe.
Your 2014 uses a very different oil to ones above, you must have the correct MB approval no shown in your owners manual, using the wrong oil will kill your DPF. Eric.

Specifically its Penrite HPR5 that is oficially 229.5 approved. Their Diesel specific 5W40 isn't approved so make sure you get the HPR5.

Mmm now I think I need some assistance, just when I thought I knew enough to help my new mechanic understand the right / correct oil to use on my OM646 which if I read right is:

228.51 and 229.31 and 229.51 which cross referenced to Penrite recommends "Enviro +5w-40 FullSynth".

Is 229.5 the same at 229.51 and 229.31.. ? thanks

If wrong oil was used, consider a couple of short-term (20-miles) oil/filter changes with correct oil.
