Question Is it worth buying a 2010 that just had the DEF system repair?

I'm going to see this van (2010 170ext 2500 122k mi) on Saturday and the owner indicated he just dumped 10k into it.

"Everything got done from DEF system to windshield, brakes, you name it" - Exact quote.

I'm wondering if the required DEF system repair indicates there might be other issues down the line or if having that done means I simply need to properly maintain with top of the line DEF to keep things working smoothly.

Is there anything specific I should look out for or ask after? I know 2010 is the first year MB used Bluetec and that there have been issues reported with the EGR valve so I'll be checking if the EGR was replaced recently (as well as the NOx sensors)

So if you had to give a thumbs up or thumbs down to a vehicle with a DEF system repair which way would you lean?

Thank you for your thumbs up! I've never purchased a car by myself let alone a used or a diesel so any reassurance helps!

The first generation DEF systems were prone to failure. Some folks were fortunate to have it repaired under warranty. The replacement and newer parts have proven to be much better and reliable.

Depending on how you drive, the EGR which is a 'consumable' type part, will always need replacement.

Unless the seller can back this statement up with receipts from mechanics specifying the work done, this statement is worthless.

I am always skeptic when seller says he put $10k into vehicle and is asking $11k for it.
Good part the pre-DEF dpf are cheap, so are Nox sensors and no SCN coding.
Still have somebody who knows diesels scan it and inspect.

The seller does have the carfax which shows 28 service records and I'll be asking for the receipt from the mechanic for the supposed work.

We plan on taking a photo of the receipt and calling them ourselves to confirm.

Is there anything else I need to be concerned about on a 2010? Also, has anyone tried cleaning their
EGR every 10k?

I also found a service campaign bulletin for the ECM "Subject: Model 906, Model Years 2010 - 2011
Update Engine Control Module Software." It's not pulling as an actual recall on NHTSA so I'm going to see if his paperwork reflects having this done. If not I'm going to try calling Mercedes with the VIN.

I'm really nervous because I've heard of people buying a 2010 only to have it enter limp mode otw home. This guy is selling it for 14k having just put 10k into it, which also strikes me as suspicious.

Anything I should ask or do (other than have a mechanic look at it) before buying?

Also, would this be a good checklist for a mechanic?

I would not purchase the vehicle until a diagnostic survey has been performed and analyized. Specifically, ECU and DPF history logs. Logs will indicate if there are stored codes (of past issues) and if the DPF system is functioning properly.

Provided is a sample of a DPF history log (courtesy of esteemed forum member Avanti). Unfortunately, I can't provide an example of a ECU log.

I'm taking it to a mechanic to check it out before I buy. Should I ask for this specifically or is this something they will do automatically?
